Profile

OCJ seeks an experienced nonprofit Executive Director to lead a strategic and effective agenda throughout Oregon that radically centers and supports those consumers most impacted by injustice. We especially welcome those persons with experience designing, developing and building ambitious and successful systemwide solutions to complex challenges and entrenched oppression.

The Executive Director will have primary responsibility for inclusively developing and collaboratively achieving a clear vision and strategic priorities, a trusted brand, and an impactful organizational culture with strong and affirming relationships that supports intersectionality among board, staff and community partners. The Executive Director will direct the operationalization of emerging strategies, build accountable processes, and ensure effective, balanced oversight of the organization’s day-to-day processes and operations; direct and develop professional staff; and serve as primary spokesperson for the organization. The Executive Director will ensure that the organization is fiscally sound and that its internal and external engagement, grants management, administration and programs are resourced to address the needs and interests of Oregon consumers.

 

What You’ll Do

The Executive Director will be a seasoned entrepreneurial executive with a passion for consumer advocacy, social and racial justice, human-centered solutions, a working knowledge of consumer issues and an understanding of the collaborative efforts required to build a system of support for the most vulnerable Oregon consumers through programs, partnerships and investments in the areas of:

 

  • Legal impact (impact litigation, legal services, legal research, legal education for attorneys and judges, and the building of practitioner pathways to increase effective consumer representation in Oregon)

  • Policy change (policy advocacy and lobbying, policy research, and legislator and voter education)

  • Community advocacy (consumer advocacy, mobilization and coalition-building, storytelling, and developmental pathways for consumer advocates), and

  • Consumer experience (storytelling and public campaigns, story-gathering, research and insights, and direct education)

 

They will be a trusted relational leader with a longstanding commitment to, and demonstrated success in, building equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace.  The individual must be adept at balancing internal management with external impact and visibility. The Executive Director will be an outstanding connector and communicator who is able to engage a variety of constituencies, from grassroots to specialized policy-makers, politicians, economists and legal experts, as well as to the broader public, in support of OCJ’s mission and activities. 

 

Strategic Vision and Entrepreneurial Leadership

  • Establish a clear vision and priorities for the continuous improvement, adaptation and growth for OCJ programs, from startup to sustaining

  • Identifying emergent and authentic consumer needs, prioritizing interests and establishing strategic goals for consumer advocacy, information sharing and learning, and building or strengthening access to resources in collaboration with Board and staff

  • Establish effective and inclusive decision-making processes that will enable OCJ to achieve its long- and short-term goals and objectives, celebrating milestones along the way, and including the development and stewardship of an influential board of directors, advisory committees and working groups

  • Serve as an effective and visible spokesperson for OCJ who articulates the organization’s purpose, programs, and mission

  • Commitment to this vision and strategy being rooted in grassroots experience of diverse/marginalized consumers (BIPOC, low income, elderly, etc.)

  • Initiate or strengthen community relationships and collaborations with organizations in Oregon and nationally who work towards consumer justice

 

Inclusive and Engaged Cultural Leadership

  • Build a strong and engaged network committed to consumer justice among lawyers and judges, legislators and policymakers, community advocates and consumers

  • Exhibit a strong equity lens in every interaction with staff, board, and community partners

  • Draw from experience working with people of multiple cultures and backgrounds; identifying intersectionality to help support all staff, volunteers and partners

  • Advance an organizational strategy and commitment to embed equity into its internal and external operations, with the guidance of external consultants and the support of the Board of Directors

  • Reinforce a culture of solutions-based innovation and feedback by creating a structure of transparency and growth mindset

 

External Relations, Resource Stewardship and Community Investment

  • Create opportunities and supported pathways for spokespersonship and leadership across the organization to increase inclusion and impact

  • Serve as leading external spokesperson for OCJ whenever appropriate with a clear, engaging and trusted voice and presence to engage existing and potential new consumers, advisors, advocates and programmatic partners, as well as other stakeholders locally and nationally

  • Build a clear and trusted brand 

  • Identify and build on state and local task forces or coalitions in which OCJ can play an active role and identify new external opportunities for OCJ leadership.

  • Demonstrate effective and accountable oversight of OCJ funds, and provide public accountability for optimal social investment of OCJ’s resources

  • Ensure appropriate and equitable grants administration and program evaluation 

 

Management Oversight

  • Create space and process across the organization for continuous learning through ongoing assessments, research and insights, active conversations and appreciative listening to generate reflective growth and a sense of teamwork and support among direct reports and staff

  • Ensure appropriate fiscal oversight and accountability to strategic goals with sufficient and balanced allocation of resources to get the job done meaningfully and well

  • Stay abreast and informed of changes required to continue relevant work

  • Deploy effective management systems and emergent technology to maximize staff, contractors and boards’’ contributions to the organization  

 

Organizational Excellence

  • Attract, retain, and develop a high-performing team whose work centers the needs of the most impacted and creates substantive, radical change

  • Demonstrate flexibility and an ability to delegate and share responsibility and ownership of projects to evenly distribute workload 

  • Identify and build necessary internal systems, staffing structure, operational plans, and best practices to achieve organizational effectiveness and efficiency 

  • Facilitate cross-departmental collaboration and strengthen internal communications with staff and board

  • Create and promote a positive, inclusive work environment that supports consistency throughout the organization's strategy and operational methods

  • Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence and rigorous program evaluation to assess effectiveness of OCJ initiatives and growth opportunities

 

Board Relations

  • Actively engage and energize the Board of Directors, Advisory Boards and working groups in meaningful participation to further the organization’s goals

  • Cultivate a strong and transparent working relationship with the Board and ensure open communication about the measurement of financial, programmatic, and impact performance against stated milestones and goals

  • Work with the Board to identify and help recruit new members whose personal and professional experience, perspective, talents, interests, and commitment will help to further the mission of OCJ

  • Regularly brief the Board on the status of the organization

 

Candidate Profile

  • Education: 

    • Bachelor's Degree (at minimum is desired). MBA, MPA, JD, or related advanced degree preferred

  • General Experience:

    • At least 15 years of overall professional experience

    • Prior leadership and management experience of organizations across a variety of developmental stages (from startup to institutional and sustaining), that prioritize social impact and are key players in their respective organizational ecosystems

    • Experience setting, achieving and adapting strategic objectives according to a changing environment and emerging needs, and managing the financial and operational aspects of an organization

    • Demonstrated experience with collaborative grantmaking and generating impact across a variety of program areas, including litigation, advocacy, education and public engagement with an ability to build genuine and active partnerships with public and private organizations and activists

    • Past success working with a Board of Directors and active committees and other collaborative structures, with the ability to cultivate relationships with members while assisting with the recruitment of new members

 

  • Social Justice and Professional Experience: 

    • Analytical understanding of the Oregon political landscape and national context

    • Experience managing and/or governing impact litigation and/or direct legal services

    • Experience in community organizing and/or managing successful policy advocacy and campaigns

    • Excellent coalition-building skills with an ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders; a persuasive negotiator able to achieve consensus amongst differing opinions

    • Experience with adult training and education, experiential learning and mindset and behavior change, as well as effective public messaging and campaigns

    • Experience with evidence-based research (legal, policy, community and consumer), human-centered insights work and reflective integration of learning with operations and organizational action

    • Experience with collaboratively building programs, creating partnerships, and directing social impact and/or philanthropic investing to achieve systemic goals

 

  • Leadership Experience:

    • Ability to build a high-performance culture that reflects the organization’s values and commitment to justice and progressive workplace policies. 

    • Impact-oriented with outstanding presentation and communication skills and the experience and proclivity to be an outgoing spokesperson, relationship builder 

    • A financially savvy and politically astute leader with the ability to set clear priorities, delegate, and guide investment in people and systems; keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills, which support and enable sound decision making

    • Strong collaborator with a commitment to the professional development of staff; successful track record of recruiting and retaining a diverse team.

    • Strong emotional intelligence, with the ability to foster an environment and culture that supports people from all communities in developing their voice, generates action-oriented problem-solving, and values transparent communication, flexibility, and authenticity

    • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with a broad range of stakeholders by building trust, buy-in, and effective, authentic relationships

    • Demonstrated success building, coaching, and managing a high-performing team, including managing conflict and providing consistent constructive feedback in a timely manner

 

Total Compensation

Salary: $110,000 - $135,000

Relocation: Reimbursement available
