Assistant Public Defender
The candidate will represent the client in criminal legal matters, such as motions, pre/post trial hearings, jury/bench trials. Prepares for litigation through review of legal documents and case information, analysis of evidence, witness interviews, and preparation of witnesses for litigation. Conducts legal research and analysis including changes in laws, legislation, procedural rules, court decisions, and case precedents in preparation of trial and to determine/anticipate legal problems and propose resolutions. Drafts/reviews, proposes and prepares reports, memoranda in opposition, briefs, legal documents, motions, correspondence, and appeals for clients. Counsels and advises clients on changes in law, court decisions, and legal issues. Conducts plea negotiations with prosecutors to establish agreements to resolve cases favorably for the client. Provides post-representation follow-up with client regarding matters such as client release, and other appropriate collateral issues. Felony jury trial experience required; 3+ years of complex felony criminal trial experience preferred. Must have Active membership in good standing in the Maryland Bar or Bar of another State. If candidate is a member of the Bar of another State, the candidate must commit to becoming admitted to the Maryland Bar within 18 months of their start date.
