Law Clerk Internship (summer 2020)

The candidate will work closely with and provide confidential support to PHEAA Attorneys on varied legal matters including researching and reviewing applicable state and federal laws. Assist in-house counsel in routing preparation of responses to inquiries made under Pennsylvania’s Right to Know laws, as well as internal organization of the responses. Assist in preparing responses to borrower inquiries and complaints, as well as subpoenas and discovery request. Assist in or conduct legal research including but not limited to: locating relevant cases, statutes, regulations and codes. Prepare initial drafts of base contract documents requested by business units. Interact with outside attorneys handling cases for PHEAA with a high degree of independence under the supervision and guidance of Legal staff. Monitor cases and prepare and manage litigation work flow and case preparation through communication with business units and Legal staff.

Answer correspondence from outside attorneys and others at the direction of Legal staff. Field correspondence and draft written responses to legal inquiries for the review of Legal staff. Must have current enrollment in a J.D. program (1L, 2L and 3L students). Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing. Possess ability to objectively assess situations in order to make impartial decisions. Possess strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with varied personalities. Possess exceptional organizational skills and ability to plan and organize work of others. Ability to apply and interpret departmental policies and procedures. Ability to comprehend program goals, objectives, and operations.Ability to gather, assemble, correlate, and analyze facts and devise solutions.Thorough knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite products.
