Title
Officer
Research (Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity)
Pew Charitable Trusts
D.C.
The Research and Science Portfolio in Program
Pew's Research and Science (R&S) portfolio supports and produces rigorous, relevant, and objective research and reporting which is fundamental to the success of the organization and to stakeholders and decision-makers around the world. The portfolio works with teams across the institution to help ensure all Pew's research is methodologically sound, accurate, and high-quality and serves as a centralized hub within Pew for specialized research and technical skills. Research and Science manages Pew's scientific grant and fellows programs which support innovative biomedical research and marine science, and oversees projects that provide valuable research and information to decision-makers and the public, support a culture of evidence, and build bridges between researchers and stakeholders.
Research Review and Support
Research review and support (RRS) facilitates the research process across all Pew programs and projects. Staff help ensure the integrity and quality of all research outputs, including reports, surveys and polls, literature reviews, and data collection and analysis. This work involves taking a research concept from initial hypothesis and proposal through post-analysis data checks, fact checking, and peer review. RRS advises project teams on the best methodological or analytical approaches, datasets and, if appropriate, external vendors to achieve desired outcomes. RRS staff also provides direct research assistance, most commonly data collection and literature reviews, as required.
Finally, RRS fosters a Pew research community that leverages and builds staff expertise, tools, and capacity across project teams and on a wide range of topics and disciplines. On behalf of projects, RRS coordinates with other Pew divisions and departments involved in the research process. The aim is to help ensure excellent, unimpeachable research outputs that significantly impact major policy changes at the federal, state, local, and international levels.
Position Overview
The officer plays a critical role in strengthening research across the institution. The officer serves as a resource and liaison to staff across the organization, working with Pew's project teams to consider inclusion, diversity, and equity (IDE) in the planning, design, and execution of Pew-sponsored research. The position will provide critical research planning support to Pew's programmatic teams across a wide range of topic areas to help ensure IDE considerations are included in programmatic design and execution. To achieve key tasks, the officer must develop close working relationships and become a trusted advisor to programmatic colleagues.
A core function of R&S is to work with project teams across the organization to provide research support and help ensure Pew's research is high quality and reflects research best practice. The officer will bring expertise in embedding IDE best practices into research at all stages of the research cycle (e.g., issue identification, research question development, contractor selection, research design, data collection and analysis, communication of results).
This position is housed in RRS and will work extensively with both the RRS team and the R&S Conservation Science (CS) unit, which provides scientific support and technical expertise to conservation projects. CS support helps inform projects about existing evidence and knowledge gaps and helps ensure external research funded by Pew is scientifically rigorous, relevant to end-users, and targeted to address strategic policy goals.
The position reports to the director, research support, and is based in Pew's Washington, D.C. office.
Responsibilities
Serves as a primary Research and Science portfolio advisor on research-related IDE matters to Pew project teams that undertake or sponsor research. Throughout the research cycle, helps Pew projects consider IDE-related questions at key points such as issue identification, research question development, contractor selection, research design, data collection and analysis, and communication of results.
Provides education and outreach within Pew about best practices in research with respect to IDE-related issues. Maintains awareness of best practices and external efforts and initiatives relevant to Pew-sponsored research, including international initiatives. Helps create opportunities for identification and engagement with a more diverse set of providers.
Serves as a senior expert for RRS and CS and engages with highly technical research, provides advice and support on research methodologies and rigorous use of data to better understand or address disparities and equity gaps. Identifies and elucidates connections between relevant research; demographic, social and economic trends; and decision making.
Helps link Pew project teams with similar interests in incorporating IDE in their research and identifies opportunities for cross-team collaboration throughout the organization. Liaises with other Pew staff with IDE responsibilities, such as the Vice President for IDE and expert staff in Pew's Strategy portfolio as well as other IDE working groups.
Provides feedback and resources related to research plans and products prepared by project teams or their contractors. Helps project teams identify potential ways to strengthen their research, including by providing advice about data sources and methods of data analysis, and by anticipating potential criticisms of their work.
Helps design and launch research agendas for new lines of work.
