The Senior Staff Attorney in the Veterans Legal Support Center & Clinic provides pro bono legal assistance to veterans. The Senior Staff Attorney is responsible for case intake, selection and representation; supervises the junior attorney and clinical law students in their representation of the client including appellate brief writing and conducting personal hearings before the Department of Veterans Affairs; conducts substantive training on VA law for the clinic’s pro bono network of attorneys; and provides advice and guidance to volunteer attorneys handling VA benefit appeals on behalf of the clinic.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Staff Attorney will maintain an active docket of VA Benefit appeals, discharge upgrades and Board of Correction matters. Students will be assigned to select cases to work with the Senior Staff Attorney.
The Senior Staff Attorney will supervise students in the collaborative and clinical manner of the Veterans Clinic. Supervision will include memo review, critique, feedback and student follow-up as well as tracking case/client status and progress. Student progress will be tracked through student group meetings and individual meetings.
Senior Staff Attorney will work with lead clinical students and the Director in goals and benchmarks for students and staff.
Senior Staff Attorney will work with Clinic colleagues to assess cases and outcomes.
Senior Staff Attorney may periodically staff and supervise diversion court students and cases.
Senior Staff Attorney may obtain adjunct status and teach “Veterans Advocacy,” a course related to the mission of the Veterans Clinic.
Senior Staff Attorney will frequently lecture and publish on projects related to the mission of the Veterans Clinic. Senior Staff Attorney will frequently develop and deliver legal trainings to attorneys regarding military and veteran related issues.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Background in legal clinic environment with an emphasis on VA benefit appeals, preferred. Discharge upgrade experience a plus
Solid analytical skills
Solid understanding of the United States military
Experience interviewing at-risk or in-crisis clients
Juris Doctor degree
Licensed in good standing; Illinois license preferred
