Senior Counsel, NHTSA & Product Safety
The candidate will provide legal advice to the Product Teams regarding safety components, new technologies and products during all phases of development, advice on safety laws, regulations, and policies applicable to battery operated vehicles. Cross team with various the firm teams, including Homologation, Legal, Strategy, Engineering, ADAS and others to ensure not only compliance but the methods by which the firm can proactively utilize laws and regulations to support EV and AV proliferation. Advise on compliance with the Motor Vehicle Safety Act, NHTSA regulations, TREAD Act reporting, and recall and field action implementation. Represent the firm before federal and state administrative agencies in technical meetings, investigations, and enforcement matters. Devise and conduct training programs for the firm employees related to safety regulations and reporting. Work with the firm government relations and public-policy personnel to advise the company on proposed motor vehicle safety laws and regulations and assist in the preparation of the firm and industry comments in federal and state rulemaking proceedings. Review and comment on technical publications, owner’s manuals, and other customer-facing materials from a regulatory perspective. Monitor and interpret legislative, regulatory, administrative, and judicial developments that may have an impact on product development, manufacture, and performance requirements. Perform special projects and demonstrate leadership ability on a wide range of issues. Juris Doctor degree with from an ABA accredited law school is required. Experience representing corporations to a variety of governmental authorities is required. Should have 8-10 years of regulatory experience in government, corporate in-house and/or a with a large firm dealing with laws and regulations impacting the automotive industry. Direct experience addressing electric vehicle quality, product integrity, or external investigations (e.g., crash investigations) at a federal or international level. Prior experience working in the automotive industry in legal or engineering is required. Direct experience with a technology startup organization is required.
