Specialist, Trading Risk & Compliance
What’s the role?
The Trading & Supply (T&S) Compliance Monitoring & Surveillance (M&S) team is responsible for the global oversight and monitoring of trading practices and business communications in T&S. This role serves as a subject matter expert in chosen product/market area(s), supporting investigations related to these products and upskilling the team. The Specialist will also actively identify ways to improve the coverage and effectiveness of surveillance undertaken, based on a strong understanding of the product/market area(s) and associated risks and regulations.
This role reports into the Senior Regional Specialist Americas and is based in Houston.
As a Specialist, Trading Risk & Compliance , you will be responsible for the following duties:
Conduct investigation of escalated trading activity, business communications or transactions based on automated alerts, leveraging a strong understanding of market dynamics and a wide range of risks and how they may manifest, to assess for potential market integrity, compliance risk or financial crime
Act as SME for position limit monitoring undertaken by Analysts and assist with exemptions, account mapping and breach escalations
Take ownership of the escalated alerts and conduct level 2 investigation into suspicious activities. Ensuring escalations follow the M&S processes including peer review and team leadership oversight, analysis is completed in a timely and quality manner, assessing whether all avenues have been explored to make the correct determination
Assist and provide feedback to Analysts on alert escalations and provide weekly reporting and metrics to management.
Conduct quality assurance on closed level 1 alerts, assessing that M&S processes have been followed and analysis is of sufficient quality, with the right decisions being reached. Provide feedback and training to Analysts as required
Periodically assess and manage the monitored population
Proactively review trends and emerging risks/regulations against existing monitoring to assess current coverage and risk areas requiring additional monitoring
Lead targeted monitoring of individuals, desks or transactions based on trigger events, including analysis of trading and communications activities and other available data points, to assess for potential market integrity or other compliance risks, focusing on high-risk and high-complexity areas, while supporting targeted monitoring by Analysts
Support Regional Senior Specialists in producing analysis and documentation of information required for STOR/STR filings, investigations and RFI responses
Identify and lead changes to surveillance process and automated alerting to drive effectiveness or efficiency improvements, based on market and risk understanding
Support compliance change projects as an SME in specific product area, providing insight into requirements and testing
Lead training for M&S team in specialist product/market or risk areas
Continually enhance specialist product area knowledge and deep understanding of market integrity risks. Proactively develop insight into chosen area and continually look for ways to improve surveillance coverage
Work collaboratively with the other Specialists in the region to deliver as one team. Liaise also with Specialists in other regions to share knowledge and learnings
Liaise with and seek advice from Compliance Advisory and other Compliance SMEs as required
Liaise with business stakeholders as required
Requirements
What we need from you –
Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
Monitoring and Trade Surveillance: Advanced understanding of market integrity risks and how they would manifest themselves across Oil and Energy markets based on strong knowledge of previous cases and experience
Regulatory Landscape Insight: Proficient understanding of market integrity, compliance and financial crime regulations and expectations and the ability to apply these to assess whether the firm’s activities are in line with regulations/expectations
Market and Product Knowledge: Advanced understanding of oil and energy products and how they trade, including physical markets logistics (covering multiple product areas), and therefore the ability to identify unusual behaviors across complex activities
Data Manipulation and Analysis: Proficient data manipulation and analytical skills allowing for large data sets to be assessed to identify trending and outliers to support investigations into trading activities.
Core Soft Skills : Proficient communication and collaboration skills, demonstrating the ability to set the right tone and relay information succinctly and/or persuasively to get tasks completed in a timely manner. Advanced business analysis and report writing skills to process information, make critical judgements and present findings in a clear and concise manner
Management: Ability to manage small teams, providing training, support, and mentorship to a small number of individuals
Candidate must have minimum of (5) five years of working experience in power, oil & gas, or in any relevant work
Bachelor’s Degree in any related field is required
