The candidate will participate in investigations, research complex issues of law, and brainstorm theories of defense. Preparing for suppression hearings, and drafting motions to dismiss and other trial motions. Assist attorneys, attend court hearings in Norfolk Superior Court and district courts, and may have the opportunity to visit and interview clients who are imprisoned. Must have completed, or are enrolled in, an evidence or trial practice class, and who have an expressed interest in indigent defense and advocating for marginalized people. Interviewing clients (interns must agree to keep confidential all information involving client representation, and the work they perform on behalf of our clients). Attending court appearances and preparing for court hearings. Representing clients at arraignment and arguing for their release from imprisonment (if 3:03 certified). Conducting legal research. Drafting pretrial motions, affidavits and legal memoranda. Investigating cases (including visiting the locations of alleged offenses and interviewing witnesses). Assisting in office projects related to criminal defense.
