Position Summary

Under the supervision and guidance of the Executive Director of Strategic Priorities, the Director of Communications will serve as a key leader of the communications team by managing the communications team, drafting/creating a wide array of public facing content (written and visual), while also managing external press personnel, press events and press inquiries.

The Director of Communications must be well-organized, an outstanding writer, have an eye for design (both digital and print), highly proficient on social media, and enjoy working within a diverse environment that is mission-driven, results-driven and community oriented. He/she will have the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations and the ability to maintain a realistic balance among multiple priorities. The ideal candidate will have a proven record as a writer, some experience designing content and generally show an ability to be a highly effective, successful manager of assignments, programs and initiatives.  The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to think and act independently, plan ahead, pay attention to detail, and communicate effectively.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Write statements, press releases and other externally facing material;
  • Daily management of communications consultant(s) and/or other communication staff;
  • Inventory press inquiries on an ongoing basis, provide draft responses to the Executive Director of Strategic Priorities, and generally manage press inquiries;
  • Manage press events and other programs ensuring they are documented with video/photo and posted via social media;
  • Manage the development of social media content and other well designed print and digital collateral for distribution;
  • Track news, local community events and social media trends to better advise the Executive Director of Strategic Priorities to help optimize communications strategy;
  • Create and manage a comprehensive communications calendar that includes major events, press inquiries, social media, etc.;
  • Work with key district staff members to plan for any public facing events and/or communications;
  • Attend OPSB board meetings and other stakeholder meetings as required;
  • Adhere to all applicable OPSB policies, local, state and federal laws; and
  • Perform other duties as required.

Educational Background: 

Bachelor’s Degree required - Preferred fields include: English, Journalism, Communications, or Education. 

 

Preferred Skills and Management Experience: 

Minimum of 5+ years of professional experience in communication field.

Strong organizational skills that reflect the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail.

Proficiency in MS Office Suite is required, and knowledge of Adobe Suite and/or other design software is highly preferred.

Expert level written and verbal communication skills; strong presentation skills are essential.

Experience with WordPress is a plus.

Experience in government, politics, public relations, media relations and social media platforms and analytics.

Demonstrated ability to continuously improve and make modifications as necessary to ensure goals are reached.

Understanding and/or personal experience in the K-12 landscape, especially with charters preferred.

Highly resourceful team-player, with the ability to also be extremely effective independently.

Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion.

Demonstrated ability to achieve high-performance goals and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, machine operation, etc.) part of the work day;
  • Required to exert physical effort in handling objects more than 30 pounds rarely;
  • Required to be exposed to physical occupational risks (such as cuts, burns, exposure to toxic chemicals) rarely;
  • Required to be exposed to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements rarely;

Normal setting for this job is an office/school setting; traveling to various schools and community organizations in the city will be required; work on evenings and weekends may be frequent.

The Director of Communications will report to the Executive Director of Strategic Priorities.

Salary:  

OPSB Salary Grade 9 ($78,000 – $105,000)
