The candidate will represent the state in cases, including felonies, misdemeanors, and traffic violations. Determine charging decisions and negotiate plea agreements. Conduct jury trials, court trials, evidentiary motions, and sentencing hearings. Draft appellate briefs. Direct law enforcement regarding procedures, case law, evidence, and warrants. Review referrals from law enforcement agencies to determine whether to decline or issue charges based on those referrals. Issue charges consistent with ethical and legal standards. Attend to the requirements of Chapter 950 and other relevant provisions of the Wisconsin Statutes that relate to notification and treatment of victims of crime. Handle in a professional and ethical manner the prosecution of cases that merit prosecution, which includes the duties as a minister of justice to zealously pursue the truth in court and present facts with candor to courts and juries. Assigned work can include cases in the areas of juvenile delinquency, certain forfeiture actions, criminal misdemeanors, traffic, and felonies. Provide discovery to opposing parties as required by law and consistent with related case law. Act independently with limited oversight in a high-profile position dealing with public safety matters of great interest to the community. Provide guidance to law enforcement agencies, social workers, and others that relate to potential or actual prosecutions, including participation in training sessions. Review draft subpoenas and search warrants prepared by law enforcement. Inform others who work in the criminal justice system and the public at large about developing trends, problems, and concerns related to their daily work in a collaborative manner. Interact with members of the community, victims, witnesses, and pro-se defendants.
