Chief Business Development and Marketing Officer
Duties: Develop and execute business development activities and strategic marketing plans that support and accomplish the Firm’s Strategic Plan. Working cooperatively with Practice Group Leaders, Office Managing Principals and other Firm leaders, to develop, implement and support innovative business development strategies for the Firm’s Practice Groups, Offices and lawyers in order to expand existing client relationships and develop new client relationships. Develop and lead a team of business development specialists embedded within practice groups or industry sections to provide significant business development thought leadership and support to the practice groups and industry sectors. Provide and direct research and analysis leading to the identification, development and implementation of innovative business development opportunities, across practices, industries and the Firm’s geographic footprint. Develop, implement and support cross-marketing strategies and activities in order to expand existing client relationships and generate new business (client and industry focused teams, etc.). Build awareness and appreciation within the Firm of its business development and marketing goals, strategies and activities in order to deepen the firm-wide culture that supports new business development. Work with the Firm’s Chief Financial Officer and Director of Pricing and Matter Management to identify and implement opportunities to increase profitability Conduct training programs designed to improve the business development skills of Firm colleagues. Training programs for lawyers in the areas of general client service, client counseling, client visits, and creative/innovative problem solving. Training programs for staff in the areas of creating an optimum client experience. Lead a client satisfaction survey/interview program designed to gauge the satisfaction of Firm clients and uncover additional business opportunities and opportunities for further alignment between the firm and its clients. Assess and regularly monitor best practices in the area of business development and marketing in professional service firms and industry generally. Manage the firm’s annual six figure Business Development and Marketing budgets. Lead and manage the Firm’s public relations efforts, including relations with media. Deliver a high level of value to the Firm, in the form of increased profitable work and an enhanced public image, well in excess of the investment the Firm makes in business development and marketing activities. Staff. Hire, supervise, develop and review all of the employees in the Business Development and Marketing Department, subject to supervision by the Chairman, Chief Operating Officer and, where appropriate, in coordination with the Chief Human Resources Officer. Department Management. Manage and direct the operations and work product produced in the Business Development and Marketing Department. Strategic Planning and Budgeting. Through a collaborative process involving the Chairman & CEO, Chief Operating Officer, Director of Pricing and Matter Management, Practice Group Leaders, Office Managing Principals and individual lawyers, create and implement marketing/business development plans and budgets. Monitoring and Reporting. Monitor and assess the business development and marketing activities of practice groups, industry teams, lawyers and offices. Determine and track the outcome of activities designed to support strategic initiatives. Ensure a correlation between the Firm’s ongoing marketing and business development activities, expenditures and the Firm’s results. Report on the effectiveness of all initiatives. Oversee the creation and implementation of seminars, client meetings and opportunities for sponsorship in support of the Firm’s Strategic Plans. Direct and facilitate the creation and on-going management of all communications vehicles consistent with the Firm’s Strategic Plan and brand identity, including but not limited to, brochures, proposals, advertisements, social media, web site, blogs, newsletters, announcements, invitations, etc. Utilizing the intranet, etc., develop and maintain within the Firm a high level of communication regarding the marketing, business development and professional activities of the lawyers and Marketing Department. In conjunction with the Chairman and President, manage and supervise media and public relations for all offices, departments, practices groups and industry teams.
