Health Equity & Community Engagement Specialist

. This position requires a high degree of initiative, along with strong and creative problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work as part of a team. This is a grant funded position and part of the CDC’s national initiative to address COVID-19 health disparities among populations at high-risk and underserved, including racial and ethnic minority populations and rural communities. Working collaboratively with other regional Montana AHEC offices, this position will assist in the statewide strategies to build infrastructure that both address disparities in the current pandemic and future responses. The Health Equity and Community Engagement Specialist provides technical assistance, planning and support to existing local multi-sector coalitions and advisory groups in rural and underserved communities. This position collaborates with the Montana Office of Rural Health and Montana State AHEC’s Community Planning Coordinator, Health Equity Coordinators from other regional AHECs, MT Public Health Institute, and the Western MT AHEC Director to develop health equity focused programming.

The successful candidate will develop, implement, and evaluate health equity programming according to CDC/DPHHS grant standards and requirements. He/she will proactively maintain and develop strong relationships with organizational partners and stakeholders. He/she will facilitate and coordinate health equity and engagement strategies and plans, with a focus on building relationships with existing local multi-sector coalitions/advisory groups in rural and underserved communities. He/she will identify trends and opportunities to grow equitable programing through analysis of AHEC program data and develop and implement a plan to increase program participation from rural and underserved communities.

Position Details:

Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package

including insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program

Salary for this position will range from $55,000 to $70,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications

Required Skills & Experience:

Knowledge of public health and healthcare systems and programs

Knowledge of social determinants of health and health equity

Excellent written and oral communications skills

Excellent organizational skills

Demonstrated ability to coordinate and facilitate large groups

Demonstrated ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects and deadlines

Demonstrated ability to problem-solve in a positive and constructive manner

Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team environment

Experience working with individuals of diverse backgrounds

Experience using social networking platforms, including Zoom and Teams

Proficiency with computer skills, including MS Office

Demonstrated ability to collect and analyze data using tools

Travel: 30% travel time, including some overnight travel will be required

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field

A valid driver’s license in good standing

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in public health, healthcare, and/or education preferred

1-2 years of experience in program coordination and implementation

Western Montana Area Health Education Center

(WMT AHEC) is one of five regional Area Health Education Centers in Montana (plus the main office in Bozeman), located in Missoula, MT at the Missoula College Riverside campus. WMT-AHEC is a grant-funded, not-for-profit organization committed to making quality healthcare and health science education more accessible to rural Montanans.
