Job Summary

The Director of Benefits is responsible for driving a disciplined administration strategy to delivery health, welfare, time away and life solution benefits.

The incumbent will interact with members of management (e.g., labor relations, HR services, payroll, legal, communications, etc.), external consultants, and external vendors. This position reports to the VP, Benefits and Policy.

Job Description

Manage external health, welfare, time away and life solution administration vendors, internal dependencies and a staff of benefits professionals to administer and/or evaluate programs. Oversee the administration and communication of assigned benefits programs including annual enrollment and new hires.

Manage administration and maintenance of benefits programs in a fair and consistent manner for all employees. Ensure department administrative practices and procedures are consistent with the program design and comply with Federal and State regulatory requirements.

Manages department operations through subordinate supervisors or a staff of seasoned professionals engaged in supporting business operations. Develops, modifies and executes policies and systems that support Company benefits programs.

Develop procedures and programs that support effective and efficient administration of benefits programs

Coordinate with benefit providers, vendors, or other external sources to facilitate program administration, maintenance and resolve unusual circumstances. Manage benefit contracts to ensure compliance with the program design and contract terms. Resolve any problems or conflicts that occur related to the various benefit programs.

Manage development of communications programs to ensure employee understanding of benefit programs and administrative practices. Develop presentation materials and conduct training sessions as required. Manage the design and development of tools to assist employees in benefits selection,

Monitor development of the staff through training, coaching, evaluating and determining appropriate work assignments.


Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 8 to 10 years’ experience in benefits management, specifically health and welfare plans.

Skill and experience in managing key vendor relationships.

Excellent communication skills and ability to interact with all levels of management, staff and external contacts.

Outstanding organizational, analytical, project management and leadership skills.

Knowledge of ERISA, government reporting requirements, IRS, SOX and DOL regulations and reporting requirements.

Demonstrated ability to coach and develop staff through strong management skills.
