Career Counselor
The candidate will counsel and advise students and alumni regarding job search skills, career options and decisions, and issues related to professional development. Review and revise student and alumni application materials. Connect students and alumni with employers seeking to hire. Oversee 12Twenty and other databases and software used in the Career Development Office to help students gain access to job databases including the BYU Job Bank and Arizona Handbook. Facilitate employer job postings, compile job postings from external sites, and provide technical support to students, employers, and administrators. Document and track student employment to provide data-driven counseling. Manage office calendars, schedule student/graduate appointments, and manage event calendar with internal and external programs and job fairs, as needed. Maximize office utilization of 12Twenty to gather data and build relationships that support and empower students and maintain resource library to supply students and alumni with updated job search resources. Coordinate and oversee fall and spring On-Campus Interviews, including communicating and supporting employers with registration; recruiting non-participating employers to expand opportunities for students; preparing application materials and schedule for employers; communicating deadlines and support students with application process; and coordinating interview rooms and other logistics for interviews. Facilitate annual graduate employment surveying and reporting; gather and analyze employment data at and after graduation for internal and external reporting; summarize graduate feedback for report to administration; and maintain communication with recent graduates after graduation and pursue those who are non-responsive. Compile data to submit to ABA annual employment questionnaire, NALP annual employment questionnaire, and US News Report. Assist Asst. Dean and Director with Called to the Bar content and presentations as needed, including overseeing communication, logistics, and attendance; coordinating travel, lodging and logistical support for external guests; and preparing and distributing class materials and assignment. Plan, implement, and publicize educational programs and events in collaboration with the Director/assistant director, including external job fairs. Represent the Career Office at external events and job fairs. Manage reciprocity requests and access. Represent the University and Law School through contacts with the public in person, through correspondence and on the telephone, and assist in the marketing of the law school and its students and alumni to legal employers. Host employers and other Career Services guests and act as liaison between students and employers who wish to hire. Manage, update, and seek out new resources for the Career Development Library and assist in the management of the webpage and other subscriptions for the Career Development Office. Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the Director, Dean, or Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Light lifting and transporting materials may be required to facilitate events. Minimal travel and occasional night and weekend work required. Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in a relevant field. A minimum of 2 years’ experience in career services, corporate recruiting, education, or a relevant field. Excellent public speaking, writing, and communication skills. Ability to multi-task, organize, prioritize, manage details, and work independently and in teams. Excellent time management skills. Ability to maintain a professional, positive, and calm demeanor, and to exercise good judgment. Ability to interact effectively with and demonstrate sensitivity to a variety of individuals with various needs and communication styles, including students and legal employers. Enthusiasm for working with lawyers, law students, and legal community. Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required. Juris Doctor preferred. Knowledge of legal job market and local legal community. Experience in legal profession and/or career counseling preferred.
