IP Patent Technical Specialist or Patent Agent
The candidate will be drafting patent applications and prosecuting patent applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Analyzing scientific or technical documents, including previously published patent documents, to assess an invention or issued patent. Drafting detailed descriptions of inventions in precise legal terms (patent drafts), which form the basis for patents to be granted by patent offices in various parts of the world. Managing the U.S. and foreign patent prosecution docket such that deadlines are met. Performing patent and non-patent literature searches for Freedom-to-operate or patentability analyses. Reviewing patents as part of IP due diligence for potential acquisition, financing, or collaboration. Participating in interviews with examiners at the USPTO. Keeping up to date with legal developments in the intellectual property field. Must possess (or expect to receive soon) an advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in biological or biomedical sciences (e.g., biochemistry, cancer biology, cell biology, developmental biology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, neuroscience, pharmacology, synthetic biology, and systems biology). Technical Specialist candidates only need an advanced degree in biological or biomedical sciences. Any experience in patent law, such as working in a technology transfer office, is a plus. Should have the ability to quickly become familiar with new areas of biotechnology; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all contacts. Should be highly organized and responsive, with demonstrated experience managing multiple priorities and deadlines in a changing and demanding environment. Must be self-starters who possess the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Work closely with experienced lawyers across the Intellectual Property platform who will provide active mentoring and opportunities to assume increasing levels of responsibility, including direct client contact, and to also participate in matters generated by the global platform.
