Job Overview:
A prestigious law firm based in Boston, MA, is seeking an experienced Patent Agent to support a robust intellectual property practice, primarily within the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and medical device sectors. This opportunity offers a dynamic environment involving cross-functional collaboration on strategic IP portfolio development, patent prosecution, and innovation assessment. The role is being recruited through a specialized legal placement firm.

Duties:

• Review scientific disclosures to assess patentability across diverse technical domains

• Draft and file patent applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

• Oversee domestic prosecution matters and manage communication with international associates for global filings

• Contribute to IP due diligence efforts, including evaluation of third-party portfolios and freedom-to-operate analysis

• Conduct legal and technical research on patent law developments and emerging technologies

• Partner with internal legal teams, external inventors, and corporate stakeholders on patent strategy alignment

• Act as a liaison across departments and coordinate with outside IP professionals when needed

Requirements:

• At least 4 years of experience in patent prosecution within a law firm or in-house environment

• Proven subject matter expertise in life sciences, particularly biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or medical devices

• Eligibility to practice before the USPTO (active registration preferred)

• Familiarity with international patent prosecution processes

• Exposure to mechanical or electrical technologies is beneficial but not required

• Demonstrated ability to analyze complex scientific data and legal concepts

Education:

• Ph.D. in a biological science, chemistry, or related life sciences discipline

Certifications:

• USPTO Registration Number (or eligibility to obtain one)

Skills:

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a collaborative, deadline-driven setting

• Technically adept with a detail-oriented approach to documentation and analysis

• Capable of interfacing with scientific and legal professionals effectively
