Assistant General Counsel, Advocacy and Political Law
The candidate will report to the Deputy General Counsel / Director of Advocacy and Political Law, the Assistant General Counsel will be directly involved in evaluating, documenting, and assessing the risks of complex transactions, projects, and policy initiatives, in a multitude of advocacy and/or political areas, including, nonprofit tax law, campaign finance law, corporate governance, intellectual property, and fundraising. Perform regulatory analysis and give oral and written advice, draft compliance guidance, and conduct relevant trainings to ensure that the National Office conducts its business in compliance with all applicable laws, standards, and practices, including federal and state campaign finance laws, lobbying disclosure requirements, gift and ethics rules, and tax laws governing exempt organizations, including, specifically, the operation of affiliated 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 527 organizations. Provide counsel and guidance on legal matters and on legal implications of non-legal matters related to the National Office’s major transactions and programs, including contract negotiation and review. Support the work of senior attorneys by taking on special projects as needed, including legal research, drafting policies, procedures and guidance to address organizational risk areas. Provide advice on other matters requested by the General Counsel and/or Deputy General Counsel. Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited U.S. law school is required. Should have 3+ years of legal experience required. Experience in U.S. not-for-profit corporate and tax matters and/or campaign finance laws is preferred. Experience as in-house counsel or as an attorney for a relevant regulator is a plus. Should be admitted to practice in New York or Washington, DC or ability to waive in.
