Responsibilities

The incumbent will lead a department of about 50 people, including Ph.D. scientists and research associates (BS or MS training). Current departmental expertise includes pharmacokinetics, PK-PD modeling and simulations, biotransformation and xenobiotic transporter function and regulation.

The preferred location for this leader is Lawrenceville, NJ, with scientists in this department working in San Diego, CA, San Francisco, CA, Cambridge, MA and Lawrenceville.

Lead scientific efforts to characterize metabolic fate and pharmacokinetic properties of drug candidates (small molecules, biologics, and novel modalities) to inform and direct lead optimization of drug candidates; proactively identify issues and enable investigative efforts that further enhance optimization of drug candidates

Encourage and facilitate research to advance new technologies and tools needed to develop screening strategies and/or refined approaches for drug disposition related issues

Represent Discovery Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics in strategic meetings and discussion with Discovery leadership to communicate potential liabilities and mitigation strategies

Engage in collaborative efforts with the scientific disciplines of the Pharmaceutical Candidate Optimization (PCO) organization (other areas are toxicology, pharmaceutics and bioanalytical) to enable and develop broad-based strategies to advance programs into development.

Interface with the Nonclinical Disposition Assessment Department (development function) and other stakeholders to ensure effective transitions from discovery into development

Education/Experience

Ph.D. degree in any area of drug disposition, with emphasis on metabolism, pharmacokinetics or biochemical toxicology

At least 15 years of experience (industry, academia and/or government) in leading research efforts in drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics; preference to scientists who are familiar with advancing candidates from drug discovery to development

Experience leading a sophisticated drug metabolism and pharmacokinetic function in the effective application of novel DMPK approaches to accelerate drug discovery

Skills Required

Strong background in drug disposition and related fields with emphasis on basic and applied metabolism and pharmacokinetic research in drug discovery

Strategic leadership ability to build and sustain scientific focus and Discovery portfolio support in drug metabolism with evidence for developing new leaders.

Outstanding problem-solving skills, with proven ability to integrate across disciplines to address issues and identify mitigation strategies

Highly effective written and oral communication skills including contributions to the published literature. Ability to address technical issues with clarity and precision is essential

Strong interpersonal skills to enable an engaged, active research department

Demonstrated ability to mentor junior scientists and advance their professional development
