Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D.*;

PLUS

Two (2) years of equivalent experience in a work crew, six (6) months of which shall have been in a lead capacity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid Class D driver's license issued by the State of New York.

*Where education is lacking, additional work experience that required reading, writing and arithmetic may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

General Description

This is manual work of ordinary difficulty involving responsibility for laying out and supervising the work of a small group of laborers involved in the maintenance of recreation and park areas and skating rinks in the City of Rochester. General supervision is received from the District Maintenance Foreman, but wide leeway is allowed for planning work methods. Direct supervision is exercised over grounds maintenance crews. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

Assists in the preparation of work schedules to insure the proper execution of grounds maintenance tasks such as trimming and mowing of turf areas, fertilization, weed control, and irrigation in recreation and park areas;

Marks and maintains athletic fields, such as baseball diamonds, football fields, and other recreation areas;

Supervises and performs maintenance on artificial and/or natural ice skating rinks;

Maintains simple records on various maintenance projects;

Supervises preventive maintenance checks on vehicles and equipment used in grounds maintenance;

Implements and enforces City and Bureau safety policy through regular inspections of facilities and equipment;

Trains and counsels subordinates in safety practices and meets regularly with them to discuss safety concerns.
