Senior Legal Counsel – Sustainability

What’s the role?

We are looking to you to be the principal lawyer for Group Corporate Relations in HQ (London and The Hague), advising on legal aspects of the Group’s interactions with governments and the outside world generally. You will be responsible for setting up and running a global monitoring system for ESG related legislation applicable to the Group as a whole (outside UK, NL and EU), including selecting relevant developments and assuring appropriate action is taken in Shell. Further, you will provide legal advice to the corporate relations and energy transition teams of Shell USA on a diverse range of legal matters. The full title of the role is Senior Legal Counsel Sustainability for Corporate Relations and USA.

The role will be a part of a legal team providing legal advice on sustainability related matters to a variety of other legal departments and businesses spread across the world. Whilst the role has a strong corporate relations and US energy transition focus, you are part of a global team and all lawyers are expected to support each other and, at times, cover for each other. This cross-over is also encouraged from a personal development perspective.

The key accountabilities are:

Act as principal lawyer for Group Corporate Relations in relation to policy developments and policy & advocacy dilemmas, ensuring consistency with Shell’s NZE objectives and targets.

Advise on and set strategy for legal risk management related to public policy decisions and policy positions frameworks.

Provide legal and strategic advice on climate related policies and positions of Group significance.

Provide legal and strategic advice to Group policy steering teams and represent Legal in policy coordination teams.

Advise on and help set strategy for the development and deployment of Shell’s internal industry associations governance & control frameworks.

Advise on and help set strategy for Shell’s participation in external platforms, coalitions and other forms of collaborative partnerships.

Act as US focal point in Legal on the energy transition.

Advise on and set strategy for legal risk management related to media, social media, and relations with external stakeholders in US generally.

Act as the principal lawyer for corporate relations Shell USA.

Requirements

What we need from you –

You must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than your current employer

Minimum of 10 (ten) years of experience in providing legal advice, preferably including related to the energy transition, ESG generally, or external relations.

Law degree and professional legal qualification in the US is required.

Admission or admitted to the Texas State Bar or Washington D.C.

Excited about the energy transition in the context of the political and societal dynamics in the US and globally

Diverse skill set, combining solid traditional legal skills with a risk-based approach and a passion for innovation and change.

Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to collaborate and cooperate effectively with business clients of various backgrounds, as well as internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
