Key Responsibilities
  Responsible for management of assigned department:
Develops department budget. Analyzes costs, develops programs to assure compliance with budgetary constraints and provide justifications for budget variances.  Implements cost containment measures and encourages conservation of resources.  Plans for the ongoing and future capital needs of the department, prepares Capital Expenditure Requests (CER) proposals with necessary analysis and documentation.  Evaluates new and existing technologies and makes recommendations for purchase or upgrades.
Develops and implements departmental goals and objectives that support and enhance the hospital’s mission.  Establishes means to measure, record, and track success in meeting goals and objectives.
Conducts regularly scheduled staff meetings to communicate issues regarding compliance with established procedures and overall work unit effectiveness.
Recruits and retains qualified staff members.  Assures that core-staffing requirements are met on schedules.
Establishes orientation which is flexible to the individual needs of the new employee and allows time for development of skills to a competent level.
Plans, directs and coordinates the efforts of the assigned department personnel to ensure the appropriate use of resources in providing services to all hospital customers and other departments in accordance with hospital’s objectives.
Ensures that employee performance evaluations are conducted in a timely manner that the performance evaluations are fair and consistent and that performance expectations are communicated.
Responsible for appropriate conduct management of staff members.  Perform conflict-resolution, present employee commendations, conduct problems solving and implement progressive disciplinary actions appropriate to St. Joseph’s Hospital policies and procedures.
Adheres to St. Joseph’s Hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
Participates in the development of policies and procedures as applicable.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Creates and fosters an environment of positive customer service through programming, education training and role modeling the behavior within the department.

Maintains excellent Patient Satisfaction results.
Maintains overall Employee Climate Assessment score within department that is equivalent or higher than SJHHC average for Employee Overall Satisfaction.

Performance Improvement, Information Reporting and Physician Relations.

Manages effective computerized system applications within the department.  Evaluates new and existing technologies and makes recommendations for purchase and/or upgrade.  Participates in long range system planning with senior management and CHI.
Provides consultative assistance to Hospital Leadership and/or Medical Staff in analyzing, problem solving, and interpreting information to identify performance measures.  Identifies, evaluates and recommends departmental/service line improvement activities based on Hospital strategic goals.
Oversees the preparation of various statistical and financial progress reports for Hospital Leadership and/or Medical Staff to include standard and ad hoc reports.  Compiles data on selected performance indicators utilizing appropriate statistical techniques.  Develops and presents reports that clearly display trends and outcomes over time.
Serves an as ad hoc member on various Hospital and/or Medical Staff Committees at the request of senior leadership and/or physicians. 
Communicates with physicians in a timely manner.
Understands and maintains all applicable contracts for area of responsibility.
Responsibilities related to primary functions of areas of responsibility:

Implements and facilitates PBDS according to guidelines/policy.
Implements measure which result in team spirit and all persons working toward a common goal.
Identifies staff with professional development needs, clinical expertise, and leadership potential and assists them in maximizing their potential.
Supports clinical education programs for nursing and other disciplines by assisting faculty with schedules, identifying clinical activities to meet objectives, and promoting a learning environment with staff.
Functions as charge nurse when necessary.
Supervises and evaluates patient care being provided on a daily basis.
Conducts assessments and participates in direct patient care on a regular basis.
Works closely with utilization review staff and social services to assure timely discharge planning and efficient use of resources.
Acts as a resource to staff in-patient care problems and patient placement / assignments.
Works with Clinical Resources/Clinical Supervisors to assure daily staffing needs are met adequately.


.Demonstrates the ability to perform circulating and scrub nurse duties.
Assists others in time of need (i.e. PTO, STD, etc.)
Participates in quality control/process improvement programs.
Coordinates repairs of equipment.
Maintains all PAR levels in the area.
Demonstrates a positive attitude in the performance of all tasks thereby contributing to the building of a strong and supportive team spirit leading to outstanding customer service within the department and throughout the hospital.
Is dedicated to meeting and/or exceeding the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers. Understands the customer is the focus of care at St. Joseph's Hospital & Health Center.
Acts as a communication liaison with employees, directors, physicians, patients/families, and all other areas of contact.
Assists with the following items:

Developing, implementing, and monitoring policies and procedures.
Daily staffing.
Monitoring, collecting, and developing reports for performance improvement data
Daily productivity tracking and completing reports for staffing effectiveness
Obtaining updated orders from the Obstetricians and Pediatricians.
Developing and coordinating the schedule (short-term & long-term basis)
Payroll functions as needed.
Organizing monthly meeting agenda items and follow-up.
Competencies, education, and education tracking.
Providing feedback with employee evaluation process.
Filing new standing orders and replace forms as they are updated.
7.   Demonstrates understanding and compliance with regulations and rules of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid       (CMS) Conditions of Participation (COP) and The Joint Commission (TJC) Standards and Elements of Performance.
8.   Attend meetings as needed/assigned.
9.   Other duties as assigned.
10. Assists director in other related duties as required and assigned.

Job Requirements/Qualifications


Current North Dakota Registered Nurse License

BS / BSN in nursing or related field preferred

Knowledgeable about current trends in health care

ANCC certification in area of expertise preferred

Charge Nurse experience required, management experience preferred

Labor and delivery experience for Baby Kind required

Must meet the criteria required by each nursing area

Minimum of four years staff nurse experience required

FIT testing

Stable/NRP preferred

BLS - Reg
