Under the direction of the California State Director, the Program Manager will lead the Underserved Farmer Outreach Program which aims to support Californias under-represented farmers and ranchers by providing access to conservation-focused technical and financial assistance. The position will work to build programming and develop new resources, trainings, and online tools for underserved, young, and beginning farmers. The position will work closely with AFT CAs Women for the Land program manager and national AFT staff working on Train the Trainers program. The Program Manager is a full-time position based out of AFT's Sacramento, California office. The position requires statewide travel to attend conferences and events, conduct partner and community outreach, and host technical assistance workshops, approximately 20-25% of the time.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage program strategy, implementation, and evaluation for the Underserved Farmer Outreach Program;
  • Organize, coordinate, and lead workshops to support implementation of climate smart agricultural practices by small and limited resource specialty crop growers;
  • Work with other AFT California staff to create a long-term comprehensive strategy for all projects within the Farms for a New Generation program;
  • Engage directly with farmers, landowners, and relevant partners to understand the needs and opportunities of underrepresented grower communities in California and develop partnerships with non-traditional partners;
  • Assist with the development of compelling proposals to secure funds for priority projects;
  • Participate in the preparation of funder and grant reports as well as any required internal updates;
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with agricultural, farmers, food and community organizations, and others;
  • Represent AFT at public meetings and conferences;
  • Work with AFT communications staff and others to create high quality compelling content;
  • Work with other staff to develop, implement, and track annual program and budget goals;
  • Oversee future program assistant staff;
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • A BA or BS degree in a relevant field and a minimum of 3-5 years of program management experience;
  • Experience in community outreach;
  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, workload, and finances under deadline;
  • Ability to work independently and as a team;
  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising and grant management;
  • Strong writing and presentation skills;
  • Spanish fluency required;
  • Highly motivated self-starter;
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally both within and outside the organization;
  • Possess very strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Experience building strategic partnerships that integrate multiple program objectives;
  • Detail-oriented and demonstrated commitment to high quality professional work;
  • Courteous, outgoing, and positive personality;
  • A valid drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle;
  • 20-25% travel.
