Director Bioethics

Duties: Identifies, addresses and resolves ethical issues that arise in the Medical Center by conducting clinical ethics consultations, teaching clinical staff and students, collaborating in committee functions and projects, and participating in policy review and development. Coordinates the Bioethics Consultation Service, conducting bioethics consultations in the clinical setting at the request of physicians, nurses, social workers, medical students, hospital risk managers and attorneys, patients and/or family members when ethical issues, questions or conflicts arise that are related to patient care. Responding to consult requests within 24 hours Monday-Friday by gathering initial information about the case from the requester and the attending physician, reviewing the medical record, meeting with key members of the care team, and, consulting with the offices of the Chief Medical Officer, Legal Counsel and/or Risk Management. Coordinating and conducting consultations with key parties, including the patient (when possible), family or other surrogate(s), key clinicians and, when appropriate, selected members of the Biomedical Ethics Committee. Documenting consults and ethical analyses in the medical record. Following up and monitoring implementation of the agreed-upon resolutions. Summarizing consults for monthly report to and discussion by the Biomedical Ethics Committee. Co-chairs and collaborates with the HUMC Biomedical Ethics Committee and participates in monthly meetings, educational programs, policy review and development. Conducts monthly Ethics Grand Rounds, including selecting relevant topics, engaging a guest with expertise in each month’s topic, selecting relevant articles for posting each month on the Bioethics Library Link, providing ethical context for discussion of the topics. Coordinates and participates in monthly Schwartz Center Rounds. Familiarizes the HUMC clinical and administrative community with the resources provided by the ethicist, the Bioethics Consultation Service and Biomedical Ethics Committee, through written and oral presentations. Conducts regular and ad hoc bioethics teaching rounds and inservice sessions for attending and house staff physicians, nurses and social workers in the clinical setting. Presents grand rounds on request for the attending and house staff physicians of clinical departments. Participates on request in rounds where attending and house staff physicians discuss difficult cases. Participates in patient rounds weekly in each intensive care unit, including MICU, CCU, PICU, SICU, and NICU. Develops and presents comprehensive ethics lectures as part of the orientation sessions for new clinical staff, including physicians, nurses, managers and supervisors. Consults on the Palliative Care Service, including attending regular case conferences and working closely with the team on selected cases. Develops and teaches the ethics curriculum for the St. Georges University School of Medicine students, including lectures and small discussion groups with students on each of their six clinical rotations. Conducts monthly small group discussions with internal medicine residents about patients in MICU and CCU. Participates in the work of HUMC committees and teams, including the Institutional Review Board (IRB), Conflict of Interest in Research Committee, Palliative Care Committee, Pediatric Palliative Care Committee, Medical Education Committee, Institute for Patient and Family Centered Care, and Improving Outcomes: and IHI ICU Collaborative. Consults with the offices of Chief Medical Officer, Risk Management and Legal Counsel on policies, procedures and selected cases that raise ethical issues. Functions on request as the ethics consultant to funded projects conducted by clinical and administrative departments. Authors or co-authors journal articles, book chapters and books on bioethics in the clinical and organizational settings. Participates on working committees that address HUMC projects, studies or activities with ethical implications and/or examine and draft or revise HUMC policies and procedures. Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational & Managerial Competencies.
