Duke University Hospital is seeking a Chief Medical Officer for Children’s Services. We are looking for a physician leader who possesses a passion for quality, excellence and compassionate care for children. This leader will actively collaborate with hospital and department leadership to promote and enhance the health of children who receive care at Duke.  

General Expectations

As a senior clinical leader within Duke University Hospital, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Duke University Hospital Children’s Services is responsible for managing clinical operations and collaborating with Senior Leadership and Clinical Department Chairs to ensure that patients receive the highest quality medical care and patient experience. The CMO will work in our Children’s Services leadership triad consisting of the Associate Chief Nursing Officer, Vice President, and CMO to advance the key missions of Duke Children’s, Duke University Hospital (DUH), and Duke University Health system (DUHS). Key priorities include:

Clinical Quality and Patient Safety

The CMO will work in concert with Children’s quality and operational leadership teams to ensure that patients receive the highest quality medical care and meet all healthcare regulations and safety standards:

Promote team engagement in continuous improvement through our Duke Quality System and Lean improvement efforts.

Consistently review and communicate Duke Children’s quality and safety performance and focus areas to Duke Children’s administration, faculty, staff, and trainees, and partner with the Children’s quality team to direct and promote quality improvement efforts.

Enhance patient experience through continuous improvement and team engagement.

Review high severity safety events and voluntary reporting signals for Children’s as defined by DUHS Quality Leadership and participate in root cause and failure mode analyses to guide improvements.

In partnership with other physician leaders in quality, participate on the DUH Performance Improvement Oversight Committee (PIOC), the DUH and DUHS Patient Safety and Clinical Quality (PSCQ) Committees, the DUH Clinical Service Unit (CSU) Medical Directors meetings, and the DUHS Chief Medical Officer’s meetings.

Clinical Operations and Planning

As a member of the Children’s leadership triad, the CMO helps lead clinical operations and participates actively in strategic planning and execution.

Partner with DUH Senior Leadership and applicable Clinical Chairs to perform facility assessments for Duke Children’s services at Duke University Hospital

Maintain Joint Commission Accreditation standards and DFS facility codes/standards.

Develop and execute on plans to improve the efficiency of pediatric patient care and movement throughout DUH.

Partner with Senior Leadership and applicable Clinical Chairs to transition Children’s inpatient services from the current location in Duke North to the new Duke Central Tower in 2021.

Recommend for appointment and renewal (as appropriate) unit/program medical directors within Duke Children’s and oversee their effort and performance.

FInance/Productivity

As a member of the Children’s leadership triad, the CMO participates actively in budgeting support for clinical operations and capital needs to deliver on our quality, access, and strategic goals.

Review salary/metrics for the Children’s employed physicians.

Participate in the development of DUH Children’s annual operating and capital budgets in collaboration with appropriate chairs and administrative leadership.            

Monitor and respond to changes in patient volume, patient acuity, and complexity with a focus on length of stay, timely discharges, and resource utilization, as applicable.

Support efforts to augment revenue opportunities and control expenses.

The CMO for children’s services will report directly to the CMO for Duke University Hospital, with a matrix relationship to the applicable Clinical Department Chairs as key leadership partners. Candidate requirements include:

Medical degree with specialty training in pediatrics, or pediatric subspecialty training in a related field (i.e. pediatric surgery)

Valid North Carolina medical license.

10 year’s clinical experience.

4 years’ experience in a leadership role.

Quality improvement and leadership experience

Formal leadership and improvement training including Master of Health Administration (MHA) or Master of Business Administration (MBA) advantageous.

Clinical risk management experience.

Strong organizational skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Exceptional interpersonal skills.
