Environmental Services

Full Time /40 hrs./week, Eve Shift (2:30 PM – 11:00 PM)  

Weekend required


Responsible for cleaning and maintaining Medical Center departments/buildings in sanitary condition according to prescribed procedures.  Reporting to, and working under the direct supervision of, an Environmental Services Supervisor, the Area Cleaner helps to ensure patient safety and customer satisfaction by providing timely and thorough cleaning services to keep Hospital in orderly, sanitary and attractive condition.  Provides thorough and efficient cleaning services to a wide variety of areas including but not limited to: inpatient areas, clinical exam rooms, operating rooms, pharmacies, MRI rooms, offices, conference rooms, restrooms, utility rooms, and corridors.  Keeps equipment and supplies in a safe and clean condition.  Cleans assigned areas using specified products while following established procedures.  Uses interpersonal skills effectively to communicate to customers, co-workers and supervisors, as appropriate.  Maintains professional conduct at all times.    Provides outstanding customer service while interacting with patients and visitors, at all times.  Ensures sufficient supplies and equipment at the end of shift for EVC closet/carts in assigned area(s); and notifies Supervisor or designee when stock is needed to support the shift.

II.            Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1.            Performs routine cleaning and other departmental housekeeping duties that may include the cleaning of standard isolation and terminal discharge areas or food service areas following procedures requiring aseptic techniques.

2.            Cleaning various horizontal/vertical surfaces. Disinfect all environmental surfaces in assigned areas (patient rooms, patient areas, support areas, labs, offices, public areas, restrooms, storerooms, and closets). Cleans and monitor procedure rooms, pharmacy “clean” rooms and/or patient rooms, including bathrooms, lobbies, support areas, equipment and maintain supplies

3.            Operates and maintains manual, mechanical, and power departmental cleaning equipment, including floor machines, vacuums, housekeeping carts, mops and buckets.

4.            Handles and disposes of contaminated materials as prescribed.

5.            May perform Waste Disposal Tech job duties.

6.            Waste removal.

7.            Mopping floors (disinfection).

8.            Wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE).

9.            Carpet care (vacuuming and spot removal).

10.          Fabric care (spot removal on drapes, chairs and cubicle curtains).

11.          Removal or replacement of drapes/privacy curtains as needed.

12.          Maintains and operates carpet equipment and vacuum cleaners.

Also including miscellaneous equipment (buckets, wringers, carts, kits, dust mops, wet mops).

13.          Handles cleaning chemicals.

14.          Conference room set ups as requested.

15.          Performs related work as required.

III.           Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1.            Work requires the ability to understand simple verbal instructions and to read and understand written instructions and less than 6 months previous experience.

2.            No certification, registration or licensure required.

3.            Work requires the skills to read and understand instructions, add and subtract numbers, and make comparisons between numbers and letters.

4.            Work requires the ability to understand and respond to simple written or verbal instructions.  Incumbents must respond appropriately to instructions, questions, or requests for information.  Work occasionally requires contact with patients and/or visitors which involves courtesy.

IV.          Required Physical, Mental, and Visual Abilities

1.            Lifting and/or carrying objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds.

2.            Pushing and/or pulling non-motorized equipment (e.g., stretchers, supply carts, mops) weighing 20 to 50 pounds.

3.            Stooping and bending.

4.            Reaching and grasping objects.

5.            Manipulating and operating power tools or machinery.

6.            Walking and/or standing for extended periods of time.

V.            Working Conditions

1.            Work is generally performed in an office or clinical environment in which there is only minimal exposure to unpleasant or hazardous working conditions.
