Description
This position is responsible for the mechanical operations in the shop, yard, mainline environment, or assigned territory. The assigned territory may include maintenance, repair, service, and inspection of locomotives and cars to ensure they are safely maintained in a quality, cost-effective manner. This position ensures that safety requirements are met and are in compliance with regulatory agencies. This position suggests and plans equipment maintenance and repair and ensures safety while providing needed quality assurance to all repairs. This position leads workflow planning and is the technical specialist and responsible for analytics.
Applies and enforces guidelines to ensure compliance and equitable application of policies, procedures, practices, programs, processes, and systems and makes suggestions for continued improvement or increased efficiencies. Delivers operational results that align with department commitments. Plans and prioritizes work to meet business unit commitments aligned with company goals and financial responsibilities. Supervises the daily activities of field Operations teams. Participates in the interview and selection process, provides training and mentorship, offers career development guidance, and is engaged in performance management. Provides timely and constructive coaching and feedback; develops staff and provides challenging opportunities. Reports to a people leader at a higher career level.
Accountabilities
Supervises daily shop and service track flow as well as scheduled and non-scheduled maintenance.
Maintains relationships with Transportation, MLU and help desk to identify potential problems and defines feasible solutions to meet TSP requirements.
Ensures facility maintenance and cleanliness and employees are meeting housekeeping requirements to support a safe and efficient workplace.
Plans repair and calibration of shop equipment and tools. Maintains tool accountability within area of responsibility.
Plans, forecasts, and executes logistics requirements to achieve efficient production results.
Supervises managers and union employees to keep Federal Railroad Association (FRA) violations to minimum.
Promotes safety protocol for workers, attends safety meetings, builds safety action plans.
Maintains and services locomotives and cars to prevent unnecessary delays. Implements work order and inspection packet procedures. Provides scheduled maintenance plans to increase reliability of the KCS fleets.
Creates daily Manager Action Plans to meet daily production and TSP targets.
Troubleshoots all aspects from end-to-end of a locomotive.
Oversees technical documentation and ensures up-to-date information is available.
Meets production and locomotive servicing targets in a cost-efficient and safe manner.
Stays abreast of FRA regulations and ensures company compliance.
Protects company assets in derailment situations. Uses outside equipment as infrequently as possible.
Coordinates training of employees.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
Required
Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college, preferably in a job related major field of study
Minimum five (5) years of relevant professional experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred
Five (5) years of managerial experience in managing/leading union and management employees preferred
Previous Kansas City Southern experience
Working Conditions
Strong knowledge of mechanical operations in shop, yard and ML environment;
Knowledge of FRA, OSHA and AAR rules;
Strong problem solving and analytical skills including process improvement and ability to influence and recommend decisions and present recommendations;
Business and financial acumen – big picture thinking;
Strong interpersonal and mentoring skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Shift work is an essential function of this job. Employees must have the ability and willingness to support critically important railroad operations 24 hours per day/7 days per week, working various shifts as assigned. Schedule assignments may include after-hours, weekends and holidays.
