The project “100 Factories” is delivered in collaboration with Open Systems Lab (****and funded by the Forestry Commission (Timber in Construction Innovation Fund). The project aims to increase the adoption and traceability of home-grown WikiHouse blocks in the residential construction sector, and accelerate the UK’s transition to circular, zero-carbon building technologies. The research project will support SMEs to access the digital infrastructures required to join a distributed supply chain of Wikihouse blocks, by developing a ‘material passport’ system and online database of WikiHouse manufacturing data and quality standards. These will be developed through codesign workshops, and tested in two locations in Devon (WoodLab Ltd.) and the Midlands (Maahe’s Way Ltd.). The role then includes elements of knowledge exchange and engagement with SMEs, as well as development of systems for digital manufacturing. Based within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business, the School of Art, Design and Architecture (ADA) offers high quality, student-centred degrees, postgraduate programmes and research opportunities relevant to today’s cultural, creative, architectural and design-related industries. The School has a growing international profile, with collaborations across the Far East, South America and Europe. Students learn from experienced practitioners who are experts in their field and join an intellectually stretching multidisciplinary learning community. In all areas there is a fundamental commitment to practice-based working and supporting students to develop as independent critical thinkers and practitioners. Studio work – and studio culture – permeate most of the School’s pedagogy, and are the central pivot underpinning all other modules and activities. You will have a postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline, including training in research methods, and ideally have research interests of digital manufacturing and circular economy in the built environment. You will be responsible for SMEs engagement, development, data gathering and evaluation. This will include working creatively with stakeholders and user groups with a range of digital technologies including CNC milling and 3D scanning in our Digital Fabrication Laboratory. You will also be involved in collaborating within the project team and contributing to the wider project objectives. You will be skilled at analysing and writing up information, including ideally quantitative data; will be able to present complex information effectively to a range of audiences; to write up findings accurately and clearly, with excellent communication skills. You will have: A PhD in Design, Architecture or Computing discipline, or equivalent experience. Research background in architectural computing (digital manufacturing). Experience of creative co-design and engagement. An ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Good communication and interpersonal skills. You will be based in the School of Art, Design and Architecture in Plymouth, but will be expected to visit various locations in the UK as part of the project. This is a full-time position on a fixed-term basis for 18 months, due to funding. The successful candidate may be required to obtain an ATAS Certificate prior to this research being undertaken. There is an essential requirement within this role that you will be required to travel to and work at different University sites and/or other business locations that may not be easily accessible by public transport.
