The Practice Management Advisor is an integral part in support of these efforts.  

  

About the position:  

The Practice Management Advisor (PMA Advisor) is part of a team that coordinates and executes a range of programs and initiatives focused on law practice management, mentorship, and new member support. This position collaborates with the Member Services and Engagement Manager to develop a vision and strategic goals for law firm business management programming, and has primary responsibility for executing that vision. The PMA Advisor provides consultations to WSBA members; develops and delivers educational materials and programming on a broad range of law practice operational and management issues, monitors new developments in legal office technology and services; manages the Practice Management Discount Network; and develops and maintains internal and external stakeholder relationships to support this work. 

Principal Responsibilities: 

Member Education and Product Development Collaborate with external and internal stakeholders to develop, evaluate, and update written guides, templates & resources, and audio & video content addressing law firm business management issues; develop and deliver education and outreach to members through a combination of electronic media (webinars, website resources, blog posts, articles, videos, etc.) and on-site presentations where appropriate. These programs focus on the needs of members at all states of practice: 

· Launching a law firm; 

· Improving and innovating an existing law firm;  

· Transitioning to a new practice area or business structure; 

· Winding down or reducing business operations, including succession and retirement planning. 

Coordinate and collaborate with the Member Services and Engagement Administrative Assistant in administering the WSBA Lending Library, drive database and delivery systems improvements for the library, and acquire new inventory as appropriate. 

Program Evaluation and Development Collaborate with the Member Services and Engagement Manager to evaluate WSBA member needs and monitor strategies for offering and delivering law practice management services efficiently and effectively within the resources and framework of what the WSBA is uniquely positioned to provide; develop, maintain and grow personal expertise regarding best practices, new technology, and cybersecurity concerns for law practice management. 

Consultations and Member Support Provide consultations by phone concerning a broad range of law firm operational and management issues such as workflow management, use of technology, issue spotting for ethics implications, general office administration, marketing, and client relations. Consultations include written recommendations for member follow-up, including recommendations and referrals; coordinate with the Diversion Administrator to develop and offer individualized consultation plans for members participating in the WSBA’s discipline diversion program; address questions from members and inquiries forwarded by the Service Center regarding member resources and law-office management issues.  

Legal Research Tool Member Benefits & Practice Management Discount Network Develop connections with prospective new vendors for Legal Research Tool member benefit(s) program (LRT program), identifying and recruiting new vendors that contribute to the goals of the LRT program; drive LRT program goals by coordinating outreach and sponsorship efforts by legal research vendors, promoting the member benefit(s), and monitoring vendor obligations for reporting and revenue sharing; administer vendor relationships by: (1) developing and publishing a Request for Proposal soliciting new vendors to the LRT program; (2) coordinating member feedback; (3) liaising with the Board of Governors regarding program changes; (4) negotiating contract renewals and new vendor contracts; and (5) developing onboarding materials and communication strategies for new vendors. 

Develop connections with prospective new vendors for the Practice Management Discount Network (Network), identifying and recruiting new vendors that contribute to the goals of the Network; expand and evaluate the Network on a biennial basis by: (1) performing a review and assessment of vendor applications for consideration, (2) soliciting member feedback; (3) negotiating contracts; and (4) developing onboarding materials and communication strategies for new vendors; drive program goals by coordinating outreach and sponsorship efforts by vendors, promoting the Network, and monitoring vendor obligations for reporting and revenue sharing. 

Other Duties  

This position requires seeking and maintaining strong relationship with other WSBA employees, bar members, and local and national organizations to successfully run this program and works collaboratively to plan, coordinate and develop law practice management, mentorship, and new member support activities that follow best practices and benefit WSBA members, as well as attend and participate in organization and department wide meetings. 

Other duties invariably arise, and the Practice Management Advisor should expect to demonstrate agility in incorporating additional responsibilities during the course of their work.  

Education: Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience or a combination of education, training or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the duties associated with this position. A Master’s degree in business subjects; J.D.; and/or Certified Legal Manager (CLM) certification is preferred.   

Requirements: A minimum of three years in law office management or business office management. Some experience in developing and presenting to a large adult audience. Experience in project or event management in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment. As a PMA Advisor, an understanding of law firm operations is important but most critical is the business management experience that legal professionals will rely on. Preferred candidates will have: five or more years of law office management and teaching experience in related topics and consultative work with lawyers and law firms; experience working with volunteers in a non-profit organization and supporting multiple programs. 

Proficiencies: The successful candidate will be: Able to strategically plan and execute initiatives; possess advanced oral and written communication skills, especially an ability to breakdown complex topics for a lay audience; possess an advanced understanding of communication best practices and presentation skills, and an affinity for clear messaging and design; have a sophisticated understanding of technology and an ability to adapt quickly in emerging areas of the law to be able to offer recommendations to legal professionals; ability to foster engagement with different business units within the WSBA along with understanding those business units’ needs/goals; strong relational skills and ability to see potential of individual contributors; ability to anticipate next steps, take initiative, exercise sound judgment, and work well independently and as a member of the team; high level of interpersonal skills to communicate with the public and members.  

Preferred: Knowledge of project management, user experience design, marketing, program evaluation.  

Further, this position should have the ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations; demonstrates poise, tact and diplomacy, grace under pressure, and the ability to interact with a broad cross section of individuals at all levels of the WSBA, its boards, sections, and committees, and the membership. Additional requirements include:  

· Occasional heavy lifting carrying boxes and equipment up to 25 pounds. 

· Dexterity to set up and use equipment 

· Occasional evenings, weekends, and in-state travel 

· Extensive use of email, telephone and a computer monitor for long durations
