As an IRS Appeals Officer, you'll conduct Appeals conferences to settle cases in which taxpayers have appealed IRS determinations on their tax case or filed a petition in U.S. Tax Court. In this position, you'll negotiate case resolutions between the IRS and the taxpayer. You'll have authority to arrive at the final disposition of the case taking into consideration both the Government's and the taxpayer's perspective and recommend the final settlement.
WHAT IS THE APPEALS DIVISION? Independent by statute, staffed by highly trained professionals who provide mediation for any taxpayer contesting IRS compliance actions. Appeals is the last opportunity for the IRS and a taxpayer to resolve disputes prior to litigation, and ensures that all taxpayers can receive an impartial review of their tax case.
As an Appeals Officer you will:

Conduct legal research into applicable rules, regulations and court decisions.
Analyze case files, supporting documents and other information involving tax liability issues.
Be responsible for arriving at final resolution taking into consideration both the Government's and the Taxpayer's perspective and submit the final settlement recommendations on tax cases to the Manager.WHERE CAN I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OTHER IRS CAREERS? must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement:GS-13 LEVEL: You must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: Experience applying tax law and/or accounting principles, theory and practices to analyze and interpret accounting records or legal issues to resolve tax issues or determine tax liabilities. Experience conducting legal research and interpreting the law in situations where there are uncertainties or conflicts in statutes, regulations, case law, precedence or other guidance to determine and apply the appropriate intent of the law in tax situations; Experience with accounting topics to resolve tax issues (e.g., stockholder equity, income recognition and other special reporting topics); Experience with preparing, examining, interpreting and/or analyzing financial statements/records for corporate reporting, to determine tax liability or to resolve tax disputes. Experience applying litigation procedures and making judgments involving matters of law particularly as they relate to resolving tax disputes. Experience negotiating the resolution of tax disputes between government and corporate or individual taxpayers.
