A law firm seeks a qualified Patent Agent to join its Patent Prosecution & Litigation team in Houston, Texas. This role offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge intellectual property matters, particularly in mechanical engineering. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in mechanical and electro-mechanical systems, with experience in patent prosecution and drafting. Duties:

  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications, ensuring compliance with USPTO guidelines.
  • Draft patent claims and responses to office actions, including rejections and appeals.
  • Assist attorneys with technical support for patent litigation cases and IP transactions.
  • Analyze prior art and help develop strategies to strengthen patent portfolios.
  • Provide technical advice to clients on their inventions, IP strategies, and patentability.
  • Manage patent portfolios, helping clients protect and enforce their intellectual property.
  • Keep up to date with developments in mechanical engineering technologies and industry trends.
  • Collaborate with legal teams to ensure clear and efficient communication of technical issues.
  • Assist with international patent filings and strategy development as needed.

Requirements:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering (advanced degrees or relevant pre-law work experience are highly preferred).
  • At least 5 years of experience in intellectual property, with a focus on patent prosecution.
  • Familiarity with machinery, mechanical systems, and electro-mechanical technologies.
  • Experience with IP transactions, such as licensing agreements, is a plus.
  • Registered to practice before the USPTO.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree (or advanced degree) in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is required.

Certifications:

  • USPTO registration is required.

Skills:

  • Strong technical expertise in mechanical and electro-mechanical engineering.
  • Proven ability to draft and prosecute patent applications.
  • Knowledge of patent law and familiarity with intellectual property strategy.
  • Proficient in patent search tools, legal research, and document management.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
