Research Attorney
The candidate performs legal research and analysis to assist assigned judges in determining the disposition of matters before the court. Writes memoranda and may recommend questions for a judge's use at oral argument. Recommends disposition of cases, and under the guidance of the judge, drafts decisions, orders, findings of fact, and other legal documents for the judge's review and approval. May provide technical review of proposed opinions and alert judge to errors of fact and law. Provides other professional legal research, analysis, and writing assistance to the judges as requested. Performs legal research and analysis to assist assigned judges in determining the disposition of matters before the court. Examines briefs, case records, and legal authorities. Writes memoranda and may recommend questions for a judge's use at oral argument. Researches statutes, case law, matters of fact, administrative law decisions, and other materials pertaining to the issue or case at hand; digests and analyzes information; and prepares reports and recommendations. Confers with judges to discuss legal research materials. Recommends disposition of cases, and under the guidance of a judge, drafts decisions, opinions, orders, findings of fact, and other legal documents for the judge's review and approval. As requested, provides technical review of proposed opinions and alerts judges to errors of fact and law. Prepares jury instructions for trials. Maintains and updates jury instruction notebooks. Assists in writing and preparing judicial opinions, decisions, and citations. Assist the Legal Self-Help Center on legal matters. Serve as a bailiff in the courtroom, maintaining order, enforcing courtroom rules of behavior, and maintaining the integrity of the jury. Serves as staff attorney to the Court, providing consultation and guidance on legal procedures and requirements to other staff. Perform other functions as necessary to ensure proper cash flow and timely litigation of cases in the court. Other duties as assigned. Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school is required. An active member in good standing of the State Bar of Michigan or actively pursuing such licensure is needed. Thorough working knowledge of the State Court Administrator's Office rules, regulations, and requirements and Michigan Court Rules are needed. Thorough working knowledge of legal terminology, legal research methods and resources, and the principles and practices of legal writing is required. Thorough working knowledge of civil, criminal, and domestic relations, and Friend of the Court legal process and procedure are needed. Thorough knowledge of the Michigan Code of Judicial Conduct and Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct, and Model Code of Conduct for Michigan Trial Court Employees are essential. Working knowledge of privacy requirements related to court records is needed. Computer literacy and knowledge of word processing, computer-based research, spreadsheet, and database management applications are needed. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. Excellent interpersonal and human relations skills are needed.
