Profile
Compliance Counsel - Life, Disability, & Absence Management
The candidate will provide prompt, practical compliance and technical support to account teams and clients on leave laws such as the FMLA, ADA and state and local counterparts. Be able to communicate findings and recommendations clearly and succinctly in layman’s terms. Research and prepare (or update) periodic email alerts, blog postings, white papers, tools, checklists, calendars, grids and other compliance-related material to help clients stay in compliance. Share in managing more complex compliance assignments as capacity permits, including operational compliance reviews of client HR policies, procedures and other practices, government filings, and routine compliance management services. Prepare and present at webcasts and live, in-person presentations on compliance-related topics in a pragmatic, practical manner. Build strong relationships with internal associates, external partners and with clients of the firm. Participate in developing creative, strategic, proactive and technically correct advice to clients both in special situations and as part of day-to-day responsibilities. Actively participate in client and prospect meetings on demand, to gather information, establish needs, clarify expectations, develop strategy and obtain feedback. Keep abreast of developments in the field to maintain technical, professional expertise. A law degree and 5-7 years of experience as an employment law attorney in a law firm, corporate law department or combination of both. Significant experience in the area of state paid leave programs as well as FMLA, ADA, USERRA, and other state and local leave requirements. Strong writing, public speaking, and relationship skills, including the ability to effectively work with others and support our sales professionals and account service teams. The ability to work quickly under pressure, and to distill complex concepts to their essence so that clients and account service teams may understand the concepts and apply them. The ability to foster and maintain good, cooperative and effective working relationships with the Lockton offices and their account service teams in the field. This position requires support of clients of the firm, and of internal associates who work under demanding timelines, and often with limited knowledge of HR compliance matters. A pleasant, service-oriented attitude, and ability to communicate complex concepts in a practical, common-sense manner, is critical.
