Civil Litigation Attorney
The candidate participates in hearings and appears in administrative hearings, and state and federal courts to try cases and argue motions and appeals. Researches and prepares pleadings, motions, and briefs. Participates in settlement negotiations. Prepares pleadings and discovery responses. Provides legal advice and/or representation to clients/agencies; drafts memoranda of advice. Conducts research on pertinent legal issues; keeps abreast of recent legal developments. Drafts formal opinions in response to legal questions. Responds to inquiries from citizens, legislators, and judges. Attends client, board, departmental, and division meetings as required. Manages and participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for assigned programs. Research and prepare legal opinions for City Council, City Manager, boards, commissions, and other city staff. Attend City Council meetings. Maintain current awareness of legislation and issues involving municipal operations. Serve as the liaison for the City with other divisions, departments, and outside agencies; negotiate and resolve sensitive and controversial issues. Serve as staff on a variety of boards, commissions, and committees; prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence. Provide responsible assistance to the City Council. Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of public law. Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints. Perform related duties as required. Completion of a Juris Doctor (J.D. degree) from an accredited law school is needed. Should have 3+ years of Litigation experience. Should be a member in good standing and actively involved with the ABA (American Bar Association). Exceptional communication skills and problem-solving skills are needed.
