One position will located in Las Cruces, New Mexico with the Chihuahuan Desert Network and the other position will be located Tucson, Arizona with the Sonoran Desert Network . The Chihuahuan Desert Network (CHDN) conducts ecological monitoring on 7 parks in New Mexico and Texas. The Sonoran Desert Network (SODN) conducts ecological monitoring on 11 parks in Arizona and New Mexico.

Las Cruces, New Mexico salary range: $33,949 to $49,200.
Tucson, Arizona salary range: $34,246 to $49,630.

A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. While in pay status incumbent will work a full-time (40 hours per week) or part-time schedule (can vary from 10 to 20 hours per week). Work schedule and periods of non-pay status are contingent upon funding and operational needs. The typical season is from August through May with the intermittent office work through the late fall into winter, but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. If qualifying based on education, a copy of your unofficial transcripts must be provided with your application.

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one full year of specialized comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) assisting in conducting vegetation studies; (2) collecting and/or recording data on field crops, plants, fruits, vegetables, etc.; (3) participating in a research project related to plants and plant ecology; (4) using computer software & database applications related to Geographic Information System (GIS) applications; and (5) preparing sites for revegetation activities such as transplanting, seeding, and applying mulch or erosion mats.


Education: Have completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours, in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled. (NOTE: You must include transcripts.)


Combination: Possess a combination of specialized experience as described in A and undergraduate education as described in B that, when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement. (Please note: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours may be used in this calculation.) (NOTE: You must include transcripts.)

GS-06:Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one full year of specialized comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) collecting and/or evaluating samples from field crops, plants, fruits, vegetables, etc.; (2) carrying out field studies on plants and plant ecology; (3) using plant taxonomic keys to identify plants; (4) preparing vegetation surveys to complete work assignments; and (5) collecting and/or enter field data into computerized databases such as the Geographic Information System (GIS).

There is no substitution of education for experience at the GS-06 grade level(s) of this announcement.

TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. There is not time-in-grade requirements for the GS-05 level. One year at the GS-05 is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-06 level. (Must submit your SF-50 that shows Time-in-Grade eligibility and reflects your title, series, and grade. No award SF-50 will be accepted).
