Duties

As a Flight Engineer (Instructor), GS-2185-9/10, you will perform aircrew duties as an instructor flight engineer for the C-130and/or helicopter aircraft; to administer, schedule and conduct flight and ground training for flight engineers; and to perform staff support duties.

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED. If you are not sure you are eligible for military membership, please contact a National Guard recruiter prior to applying for this position.

This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard, required prior to the effective date of placement.

Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.

Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.

Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.

Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.

Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.

May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.

Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.

May be required to travel in military and /or commercial aircraft to perform temporary duty assignments.

May perform maintenance or act as crew chief in leading and directing others in the accomplishment of maintenance when away from home station.

Incumbent is required to maintain proficiency and currency in the use of small arms. As prescribed by regulation, may be required to carry and use a concealed weapon while performing aircrew related duties.

Incumbent is required to maintain currency in water/land survival techniques to operate and survive in a hostile environment.

Incumbent is required to complete an annual flight physical and maintain currency of the required series of immunizations for worldwide capability.

Position may require a clearance based on security access requirement, in which case the incumbent will be required to obtain and maintain the designated learance level.

For positions requiring the operation of motor vehicles, candidates must have a valid state driver?s license for the state in which they live or are principally employed.

For positions requiring a security clearance (Secret or Top Secret) the applicant must possess or be able to obtain a clearance within one year of appointment.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE

: Experience which has provided the applicant with a knowledge of aircraft weight and balance computations; aircraft performance data; aircraft records maintenance; and aircraft systems.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE

: GS 09:

Must be currently qualified as Basic Flight Engineer.Knowledge is mandatory of: electrical, communication, navigation, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems applying to aircraft and related systems; flight theory; minor in-flight maintenance; personal equipment and oxygen use; aircraft emergency procedures; and using and interpreting diagrams, schematics, aircraft performance charts, loading charts, technical publications and flight manuals.

GS 10:

Must be currently qualified as Instructor Flight Engineer.Knowledge is mandatory of: electrical, communication, navigation, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems applying to aircraft and related systems; flight theory; minor in-flight maintenance; personal equipment and oxygen use; aircraft emergency procedures; and using and interpreting diagrams, schematics, aircraft performance charts, loading charts, technical publications and flight manuals.

2. Knowledge of the methods of instruction, aircrew training program requirements, procedures, and standards of performance; and skill to apply this knowledge in planning, developing and executing unit training/evaluation programs.

3. Knowledge of aircraft maintenance procedures and skill in diagnosing problems and accurately reporting detailed symptoms and conditions.

4. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to prepare lessons, documents and reports, present training/instruction, and brief crews.

Must maintain instructor qualification and demonstrate the highest degree of technical competency in the theory of flight, aerodynamics, and aircraft systems operation. Must remain proficient in the principles of instruction and demonstrate good judgment, patience, tact, and a desire to instruct.

Must attain and maintain mission ready status at the appropriate crew qualification level in the unit's assigned aircraft. Periodically, as prescribed by regulations, must take and pass written and in flight standardization/evaluation examinations to include random no notice evaluations. May be required to maintain flight examiner qualification.

Exposed to the hazards associated with aircraft flight including but not limited to: gravity forces up to one and one half, working in strained or cramped position as well as exposure to inclement weather during ground operations and frequent climbing, frequent kneeling, and bending. Additionally, exposed to extreme hazards induced from operating aircraft in an actual or simulated tactical environment, which may include, but not limited to, combat air crew training sorties, aggressive maneuvers, low level flights, formation flights, aerial refuelings, airdrops, maximum effort takeoffs, maximum effort landings, and unpressurized operations at high altitude or other related scenarios.
