Profile

A law firm is seeking a highly qualified Mid-Senior Biotech IP Patent Agent with a strong background in biological sciences. This position requires expertise in drafting and prosecuting patent applications, evaluating patent portfolios, and conducting due diligence investigations. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to client service, the ability to work directly with clients, and exceptional organizational and communication skills. The candidate should also be comfortable working in a team-oriented environment and have leadership capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications in the U.S. and internationally, focusing on biotechnology-related inventions.
  • Evaluate and manage patent portfolios for clients, ensuring strategic protection of intellectual property.
  • Conduct patentability assessments, freedom-to-operate analyses, and due diligence investigations for mergers, acquisitions, and licensing agreements.
  • Prepare responses to office actions and advise clients on the prosecution of patents before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and international patent offices.
  • Collaborate with partners, associates, and clients to develop effective patent strategies that align with the client’s business goals.
  • Provide guidance to clients on patent infringement risks, as well as potential design-around solutions.
  • Assist in preparing intellectual property opinions, including validity and non-infringement opinions.
  • Keep current on changes and developments in patent law, particularly as it pertains to biotechnology and life sciences.
  • Assist with opposition and appeal proceedings when required.
  • Work closely with clients, maintaining strong professional relationships and providing high-quality, responsive client service.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Ph.D. in Biology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology, or a related field.
  • Certification: Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Experience: 3-8 years of experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications, evaluating patent portfolios, and conducting due diligence investigations, with prior law firm experience preferred.

  • Strong technical expertise in biological sciences with the ability to understand and explain complex scientific concepts.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to a range of audiences.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to mentor junior colleagues and lead projects independently.
  • High attention to detail, critical thinking, and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work directly with clients, developing and maintaining professional relationships.
  • Commitment to providing high-level client service, responsiveness, and tailored intellectual property solutions.

Additional Desirable Attributes:

  • Experience working in a law firm or legal setting with exposure to intellectual property law.
  • A proactive, client-focused approach, with a commitment to excellence in all aspects of patent prosecution.
