This is a regional field position that provides environmental compliance support to facilities in several states. Support includes branch based environmental compliance and permitting, as well as regulatory approvals and compliance associated with specific products. In addition, the candidate will coordinate strategies sought at promoting sound regulatory compliance principles and practices and develop and implement strategies that provide continuous improvement of the regulatory compliance programs. This position works collaboratively with the EHSQ regional teams to collectively support operations.
Leads environmental, health, and safety compliance within assigned operations region
Secure and renew permits, approvals and plans for facilities; train field operations personnel in understanding permits and ensure that the requirements of the permits, plans and approvals are being met.
Prepare and submit reports; serve as regional contact for federal, state, and regional agencies.
Provide training on and implementation of newly crafted environmental compliance systems and tools.
Lead environmental compliance components of internal audit team. Assist operations in addressing audit recommendations and corrective actions.
Maintain knowledge of all applicable corporate, federal, state, and local regulatory requirements for environmental and general regulatory compliance. Remain informed on developing regulatory requirements, particularly on a state and local level, identify potential impact to Univar operations, and communicate those impacts to Director of Environmental Compliance.
Serve as Subject Matter Expert for a topic, developing national programs and training, writing explainers on the topic, and providing advice on complicated problems within the area.
Participates in accident/incident investigations and corresponding corrective actions
Consults on emergency response
Primary liaison with agencies regarding regulatory compliance
Resource for Univar USA customers
Responsible for waste minimization and pollution prevention at the business units
Participates in capital project planning (i.e., Haz-ops, SOP development and project management)
Participates in community outreach programs
Takes lead role in company’s Responsible Care and Responsible Distribution initiatives.
4-year degree in Environmental Science, Health & Safety, Chemical Engineering, or related subject, and/or equivalent work experience.
5 years’ practical experience with environmental and regulatory compliance, preferably within the chemical, pharmaceutical or related industry. Thoroughly familiar with all major federal environmental regulations (CAA, CWA, RCRA, FIFRA) and DOT hazardous material regulations. Familiarity with OSHA, FDA, and Homeland Security CFATs is a plus.
Demonstrated ability to handle federal, state, and local regulatory compliance at numerous facilities in multiple states.
Experience with developing and implementing an environmental management system (ISO 14001) is a plus
Proven leadership and teamwork skills with demonstrated abilities to both work collaboratively and to influence those with whom no formal hierarchical relationship exists
Demonstrated ability to be trusted business advisor- problem solving, developing action plans and making recommendations rather than simply completing when asked.
Excellent problem-solving techniques and quantitative, analytical skills
Highly effective written and verbal communications skills
Consistent track record to work at all levels of the organization and with people of various backgrounds, experience, and education levels
Ability to prioritize and manage a sophisticated workload and projects in a fast-paced environment
Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel), SharePoint and other developing interfaces (Tableau, Enablon, SAP, etc.)
