UW Medicine provides outpatient care for more than 1.3 million patients each year at its 12 UW Neighborhood Clinics and its many other primary and specialty care clinics.

The Director of OD&T reports to the Assistant Vice President of UW Medicine Human Resources and will maintain up to date OD trends and best practices with a focus on continuous improvement. UW Medicine OD&T exists to create a culture of learning and discovery that unifies UW Medicine, thereby creating the capacity to accomplish the strategic goals of the enterprise. The OD&T team proactively provides support to senior leaders and executives through team and organizational assessment, interventions, and executive coaching. As the OD&T team supports UW Medicine’s strategic plan and organizational priorities, the Director of OD&T will focus on forward-looking process improvements and tactical strategies.

Director of Organization Development & Training (OD&T)

The Director of OD&T is essential in building and implementing strategies that promote a service-oriented culture and operational effectiveness. This position is a key member on the UW Medicine Human Resources leadership team and serves as an advisor to the Assistant Vice President of UW Medicine Human Resources on matters related to onboarding, employee development, leadership development, and promoting a service-oriented culture. This position is responsible for OD&T activities for all of UW Medicine which includes Harborview Medical Center (HMC), UW Medical Center Montlake and Northwest (UWMC), Airlift Northwest (ALNW), UW Physicians (UWP), and UW Neighborhood Clinics (UWNC).

The Director of OD&T is a strategic, operational, and tactical leader. Key responsibilities will include creating the OD strategy with areas of focus that enables the team to develop, support, and implement OD solutions; alignment and collaboration with key stakeholders at both the local entity level and health system level of UW Medicine (clinical, non-clinical, executives, etc.); and strategic collaboration with business partner teams (UW Medicine Patients Are First, UW Medicine Transformation of Care, UW Medicine Finance, UW Medicine Learning Management, etc.) to influence or change organizational systems to ensure measurable and sustainable results.

Role Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership of UW Medicine OD&T

Direct support provided to clinical and non-clinical operations in areas of leadership development, team development, strategic planning, and other performance improvement methodologies; responsible for meeting several legal and regulatory requirements including The Joint Commission requirements such as new employee orientation and ensuring staff receive required annual education.

Key partner in the UW Medicine Patients Are First initiative. Plans and facilitates quarterly Leadership Development Institutes (LDI) which gather the top 500 UW Medicine leaders at off-site locations for specific full day training sessions. Post-LDI responsibility for rolling out and supporting the training introduced at the LDIs to the entire UW Medicine workforce.

Help form and lead the Leadership Advisory Council, a guiding coalition of all the entities which makes recommendations/suggestions on the future direction of leadership development activities for the entire health system.

Operationalize the strategic priorities of the HR Steering Committee.

Deliver an ongoing and comprehensive UW Medicine New Employee Orientation for non-physician members of the workforce.

Support UW Medicine Human Resources and UW Human Resources in creating, implementing, and revising hybrid work protocols for staff.

Management Duties

Hire, train, mentor, and motivate a team currently comprised of six professional staff and occasional hourly help.

Develop and administer an annual budget of $1.1M. Responsible for ensuring efficient operation of the department; timely and appropriate scheduling of training classes, smooth and efficient logistics for all training classes, appropriate resource utilization for responding to consulting requests, etc.

Coach and guide OD&T staff in developing their competency in training design and delivery. Serve on campus-wide committees, task forces, and workgroups as required/requested.

Consulting & Training

Conduct performance and needs assessments throughout UW Medicine as required or requested and ensure that consulting work aligns with strategic goals.

Implement appropriate solutions to needs identified in assessments. Evaluate effectiveness of consulting interventions; identify and implement improvements.

Responsible for developing and delivering the Leadership Development program for all of UW Medicine to improve competency and performance of leaders.

Leverage use of the Learning Hub and seek creative ways of designing and delivering electronic learning.

Developing curriculum and implement quarterly trainings. Expand existing leadership trainings and refining them to be appropriate to participants system wide.

Qualifications:

The most competitive candidates will bring awareness of current and future OD and healthcare industry trends, experiencing with leading hybrid solutions, and the ability effectively operate between strategic, operational, and tactical approaches.

Typically, candidates are qualified to perform the responsibilities of this position by obtaining technical expertise and knowledge through the attainment of a degree in Business Management, Human Resources, or Organizational Development with at least 5 years of experience in leadership focused on strategy development, implementation, customer service strategy, and results measurement. However, we acknowledge there are other career paths in which a candidate may gain the expertise and ability to perform this work. Education, experience, and training that demonstrates proficiency and the ability to perform the job responsibilities will be evaluated for equivalency to the required education and experience qualifications listed below.

Required:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent proficient training and experience.

At least 5 years of experience in Organizational Development, Program/Project Management, or Consulting with a focus in business operations, strategy development, implementation, customer service strategy, and results measurement.

Experience in a leadership or management role of a team (healthcare setting preferred).

Leadership experience and a history of leading change.

Business planning skills including budget and metrics.

Genuine customer service orientation with a demonstrated desire to exceed expectations

Ability to serve multiple customers (executive leaders, directors, managers, front-line staff, etc.)

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:

Coaching or Project Management Certification a plus.

Preferred 3-5 years’ experience in healthcare setting or industry.

Preferred 5 plus years of senior level OD consulting experience, including four plus years of supervisory experience.

Conditions:

Primary work space located at the UW Tower but requires frequent travel to HMC and UWMC as well as other UW Medicine entities.

Regularly requires greater than 40 hour work week.
