Profile

General Counsel
The candidate provides proactive legal services and legal advice to the Superintendent and/or staff relating to the operations and policies of the District. Provides legal advice to and research for the Superintendent, the Human Resources Director and other Administrators. Responds to EEOC and HRD charges; may investigate these as well as other employee issues that arise. Provides guidance and support to employees and handles government documents related to immigration and visas including extensions and applications. Provides legal representation to the District in due process hearings, student expulsion hearings, disciplinary employment hearings and arbitrations, etc. Coordinates and provides training on legal matters for the purpose of keeping staff informed of the latest changes to student and employment related matters. Responds to inquiries and complaints filed through state and federal agencies. Provides legal advice to the Superintendent and Board of Education regarding policies and procedures for the purpose of ensuring all laws, regulations, and policies are adhered to. Recommends changes in policies and procedures in order to comply with applicable Federal and State laws and Public Education rules. Coordinates with outside counsel representing the District, especially in the areas of Special Education, construction, and contracts. Represents the Board of Education in due process hearings, grievance hearings and School Board administrative procedures, ensuring that all laws, policies, and regulations are followed. Develops and maintains a record system to ensure documentation of legal matters affecting the school district. Monitors costs of external legal fees. Researches public and other legal records as needed in order to write opinions and answer questions posed by district departments. Performs other duties as assigned.
