The Department of Public Safety is looking for a Protection Systems Technician. This position will report to the Protection Systems Manager and support the University’s mission and commitment to excellence and diversity in our students, faculty, staff and all other activities.

 

Essential Function

Under general supervision from a designated administrator, monitor, maintain and repair University electronic safety and security systems.

 

Characteristic Duties

*Install, repair, replace, service and test various types of electronic equipment. Performs component-level repairs or makes modifications of equipment. May perform some fabrication of parts. *Test system components at the required intervals and with testing methods outlined in National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 72. *Monitor systems, participate in troubleshooting/problem determination of electrical, mechanical, network, and software faults and effect repairs, including soldering, as required or refer problem to appropriate party. Follow-up to inform department of current problem status and ensure issue is resolved. *Work closely with Planning, Design and Construction by reviewing building drawings and documents to give suggestions and approval for new fire alarm installations. *Assist with project management by attending job meetings, coordinating work with other trades to optimize installation time, and provide system check out at end of installation. *Act as emergency responders for fire alarms and deal with impaired systems during non-business hours, when the Fire Inspectors are not on campus. *Inspect equipment, perform functional testing, preventive maintenance, and provide system administration and appropriate documentation for maintenance activities. *Monitor parts inventory and requests additional parts. *Provide system user training. *Will be designated as “Essential Personnel” and required to work nights, weekends, holidays and any other emergency campus closures. Often working alone during these times. *Subject to being on call or called back to work. May be required to work flexible hours and/or overtime as required. *Perform related duties based on departmental need.

Minimum Qualifications

Two-year technical school with six months experience; -OR- Associate’s degree with six (6) months experience; -OR- 2½ years of experience. Degree must be in Electronic Technology or related field. Experience must be in installation and repair of digital electronic systems. Must obtain/possess a current fire system repair license for the State of Ohio within one year of employment. Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Must pass a complete background check and polygraph.

 

Skills and Abilities:

*Have strong technical and mechanical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to effectively work independently. *Have knowledge of test equipment including multi-meters, battery analyzers, programmable power supplies, decibel meters, and network testers. *Able to install low voltage/alarm electrical systems to manufacturer specifications. *Able to understand and interpret industry codes and standards. *Able to safely and effectively use general hand tools and power tools.

Ideal Qualifications:

*Strong background in electronics and experience with Simplex fire systems.

Unusual Working Conditions:

*Applicant will be required to work some holidays, emergency school closings, and weekends as they will be considered “Essential Personnel”. Often working alone during these times.

Work Schedule:

*Shift: Second Shift *Hours: 4:00 pm – 2:00 am (10 hour shift/4 days a week) *Standard Days: Varies

Physical Requirements

*Lifts, carries or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing 20 to 100 lbs. *Frequently bends, kneels, crouches and reaches over head. *Drives company vehicle. *Continuous walking, standing, and moving about. *Climb up and down ladders and over and under equipment. *Exposure to adverse weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, odors, dirt and dust.

This position will be a professional position paid at an hourly rate.
