Lab Assistant - VH, Lab Core Lab, Full Time ','056650','!*!   POSITION SUMMARY:  To be fully engaged in providing Quality/ No Harm, Customer Experience, and Stewardship by: Working as a team member and maintaining a positive attitude. Supporting the Laboratory Manager and Technologists. May perform CLIA waived testing. Associate meets the minimum qualification set forth by the state and CLIA regulations. The Lab Assistant is assigned to one of the following laboratory sections of responsibility: Blood Bank, HRMC Core Laboratory, Microbiology/Immunology Managing Laboratory supply inventory.  PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:  Complies with policies/processes/procedures to provide quality services with < 2 errors per year Assures valid patient results as evidenced by zero patient or sample identification errors in the pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of laboratory procedures per evaluation period. Monitors and complies with Joint Commission/CAP standards and performs all job functions in accordance with State and Regional requirements to ensure compliance to these standards. Knowledgeable of specimen collection requirements, where applicable. Attends all mandatory meetings/in-services and reads and signs off on all meeting minutes as required. Manages daily workload in a productive manner and assists others when needed. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility as measured by volume adjusted budget as measured by a variance of no more than 5% over volume adjusted budget. Availability to meet departmental staffing demands (i.e. holiday’s weekends, coverage for illness and/or emergencies, reduced operations) per department expectations. Complies with I CARE as measured by no positive disciplinary action per Human Resources Policy 4.01. Communicates effectively with customer (patients, physicians, other Health First associates, the public, etc.) practicing excellent customer relation skills at all times   ','!*!   QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:  Current enrollment or completion of a post-secondary technical or clinical program preferred Must be willing and able to work with bio-hazardous/toxic materials following OSHA guidelines. Works efficiently and effectively under pressure and during emergencies. Possesses organizational skills and techniques to minimize turn-around-time. Maintains a clean and orderly work area. Orders office supplies. Utilizes appropriate supplies in an efficient manner to minimize waste and optimize resources. Assists in inventory control by ordering, logging, labeling, rotating, and putting away new supplies and communicates supply need or issues to Supervisor or Manager. Checks expirations dates and discards old expired reagents. Assists with archive and retrieval of specimens. Maintains a clean and orderly work area. Assists with replacing full red bins. Prepare boxes and maintain paperwork for offsite storage. May perform CLIA waived testing.  HRMC Core Laboratory May be required to assist with Laboratory glass washing. May be required to assist with emptying Methanol waste. Assist with discarding old samples, monthly specimens, CSF, fluids, etc. Assist with the MPA supply stocking as denoted by competency sheet. Assist with the p501 as denoted by competency sheet.  Clerical Skills Assists with slide storage and pulls slides as requested. Gather and replenish monthly Equipment/Quality Control sheets.  HRMC Blood Bank May be required to assist with emptying Vision waste. Assist with discarding old specimens Managing the Blood Bank blood and supply inventory. Specimen receipt; trouble shooting mis-labeled specimens and order discrepancies. Perform equipment maintenance and QC un-related to patient testing. Represents the Blood Bank in troubleshooting general inquiries. Blood and/or Blood Component processing, storing, shipping, modifying, selecting and issuing compatible blood products using a validated Transfusion Service Information System. Orders blood and blood products through the Blood Center’s software system. Organizes and orders blood inventory for the community hospitals. Rotates blood inventory as necessary.  Clerical Skills Filing and record retrieval. Lab Assistant will work in pre-analytical area of Microbiology department. Properly identifies specimens (labeling) and problems related to specimen integrity. Assists in accessioning laboratory specimens and may be required to perform test ordering. Understands and performs workings in the computer and understands its limitations. Streaks the bacteriology media (plates) according to department procedures and incubates them in required specific places. Loads blood culture bottles into BacTec FX Blood culture analyzers and removes Negative and Positive cultures, when instruments signal the end of incubation or alerts of a positive vial.
