Staff Attorney
The candidate will conduct and/or assist with all phases of legal advocacy for individuals and classes of persons including research, preparation of documents, interviewing and counseling, negotiations and appearing before administrative tribunals and courts at the trial and appellate level. Will make presentations to consumers and the public concerning legal rights and remedies. Will assist in the supervision of students from other disciplines. Should have Juris Doctor Degree and licensed to practice law in Alabama or must become a member of the Alabama Bar within one year of the date of hire. Should have the ability to manage a caseload, including litigation at all levels of state and federal courts. Effective communication skills represent clients in legal hearings, meetings, negotiations or administrative proceedings, to actively promote legal, policy and legislative developments at state and local government levels, and to develop and conduct trainings is essential. Exceptional research, writing, and editing skills (for a variety of audiences, including legal, legislative, journalistic, and public), and comfort with being edited by others is an advantage. Knowledge of standard software applications is a plus. Knowledge of laws, rights, and services as they pertain to people with disabilities, and/or direct representation of people with disabilities are essential. Knowledge of election laws and current voting-related issues is a plus. Knowledge of laws, rights and services that pertain to elderly populations is an advantage. Experience in the disability rights movement and/or extensive contacts in the disability community will be considered. Ability to read, write and speak Spanish or communicate using American Sign Language, with competent fluency is preferred.
