Forestry Technician, GS 10
Duties : Manage complex measurement program for volume determination and product accountability. Manage and coordinate regional training and quality control programs over an extended period of time. Make decisions concerning interpreting of considerable data, planning of the work, and refining the methods and techniques to be used. Provide technical support in the management and protection of forest resources. Administer diverse range of program operations with complicating variables regarding timber measurement and accountability programs. Responsible for managing, planning, directing, and coordinating the training and quality control. Develop procedures to gather accurate volume and value data for a wide variety of silvicultural prescriptions and stand conditions. Check the accuracy of scaling by Third Party Scaling Organizations and provides final determination of volume accuracy. Responsible for check cruising on Agency cruisers and contract cruisers. Use of statistical and quantitative measures associated with standard Forest sampling techniques. Coordinate sample scale systems using various sampling methods such as electronic data recorders or pull tab frequency cards. Conduct logging yard surveillance and inspect for compliance. Develop procedures for determining volume of timber damaged. Monitor log export by inspecting log movement on trucks, trains, and ships. Check for remanufacturing of logs and product size such as cants. Serve as the unit expert in volume determination for timber theft and timber trespass cases. Serve as the regional expert in timber measurements. Provide technical direction and advice to Timber Staffs, Forest Supervisors, District personnel, and law enforcement officials in the areas of timber measurements. Serve as primary contact with Third Party Scaling Organizations and timber purchasers for the purpose of compliance.
