Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer
Duties: Responsible for providing strategic leadership and management for the University’s institutional ethics and compliance program. Develop, implement and maintain an effective institution-wide ethics and compliance program designed to prevent, monitor, detect and respond to non-compliance. In coordination with OGC, serves as a key advisor to senior leadership on all compliance related issues. In coordination with Internal Audit and Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), evaluates the effectiveness of compliance activities. Identifies and develops initiatives and subcommittees to address and resolve strategic and/or University-wide ethics and compliance areas of concern. Ensures coordination and resolution of issues with senior leadership of organizations responsible for compliance. Develop, coordinate, and participate in educational and training programs to enhance awareness of ethics and compliance requirements and responsibilities. The Senior Director reports to the Stanford University Senior Associate Vice President and Chief Risk Officer. Supervises compliance and ethics staff and provides on-the-job training and guidance to facilitate their professional development. He/she maintains close working relationships with the university’s senior leadership, especially the Office of General Counsel (OGC), Human Resources, Internal Audit, and Enterprise Risk Management. In coordination with the Senior Associate Vice President, he/she will prepare and present the results of university ethics and compliance activities to the Audit, Compliance and Risk Committee of the Board of Trustees. Chairs the ERM, Ethics and Compliance Steering Committee. Collaborates with other University Committees to promote ethics and compliance. The Senior Director develops and implements annual ethics and compliance plans for the university based on systematic and ongoing risk assessment conducted in coordination with senior leadership. Serves as primary point-of-contact for the Ethics and Compliance Helpline and conducts preliminary assessments. Directs questions to appropriate compliance offices and follows-up to ensure appropriate actions are taken to resolve any non-compliance issued identified. Coordinates related investigations with Chief Audit Executive. Assist in the administration of the Office of the Chief Risk Officer, including preparation of the annual Ethics and Compliance activity report, performance of special projects, and recruitment, hiring, and development of department personnel. Provides “early warning” services to the entire campus regarding new regulations or compliance initiatives by government audit or regulatory agencies. The institutional compliance program is based on the Federal Sentencing Guidelines criteria for effective compliance and ethics programs. Qualifications: Minimum Education and Experience Required: Bachelor’s degree and ten years of relevant audit, compliance or other relevant experience in higher education, health care, research-based non-profit organizations, or government contracting.
