Associate Vice President, Legal Affairs
The candidate will handle duties that include: Organizes plans, prioritizes, and reviews legal work products of supervised employees. Ensures accuracy and thoroughness of legal research and analysis performed by supervised employees prior to dissemination outside the department. Prioritizes work effectively and completes work within designated time frame and provides biweekly status reports of current projects and activities to the Vice President of Legal Affairs. Provides accurate, knowledgeable, and timely legal advice based on research and analysis of issues involved in the situation. Assures that the Vice President of Legal Affairs is made aware and kept informed of developments in projects and activities as necessary. Establishes and maintains positive and effective working relationships within the department, the institution, The University of Texas System, and the local community. Maintains awareness of developments in areas of law affecting the institution, by keeping current on legal literature, networking with other attorneys, and attending conferences and seminars. Maintains privacy and confidentiality of information and records at all times consistent with institutional and legal standards. Manages medical negligence, clinical risk management and premises liability issues, claims and litigation in coordination with Office of General Counsel of UT System, the Attorney General’s office, outside counsel and other legal agencies, as appropriate, to ensure interests are capably pursued. Establishes appropriate and effective relationships with the Human Resources Department to ensure appropriate consideration of employment-related legal issues and to establish internal due process procedures. Manages, in coordination with Attorneys, the Litigation Hold process for all potential litigation matters. Manages, in coordination with Attorneys, activities related to patient care issues and hospital operational matters; Risk Management practices; and litigation projects. Assists with Texas State Board of Medical Examiners investigation responses as well as responses to investigations from other state licensing boards, as needed. Manages, reviews, and responds to requests for legal documents, provider narratives, and declarations/affidavits by physicians and other health care providers pertaining to third party litigation. Other duties as assigned.
