Senior Tax Accountant
The candidate under the direct supervision of the Assistant Controller, and according to established policies and procedures, the Senior Tax Accountant performs a variety of administrative and accounting duties in order to maintain accurate financial, tax and billing records and reports. Observes confidentiality of client and law office matters. Assists in preparation of financial analyses, budgets and reports. Reviews monthly, quarterly, and semi-annual sales and use tax returns prepared by staff accountant. Reviews annual property tax returns prepared by staff accountant and completes certain returns as necessary. Completes quarterly and annual tax payments to all applicable states. Completes annual state tax allocation for outside tax accountants. Conducts annual partner tax survey re: state filing preferences. Completes annual tax matrix for outside tax accountants. Completes annual Outside Income and SEC survey for all attorneys. Reviews meals & entertainment, nondeductible dues, charitable contributions, and other nondeductible expense detail for inclusion in our book-to-tax reconciliation. Completes annual book- to-tax reconciliation for federal 1065. Reviews federal 1065 which is prepared by outside tax accountants. Responsible for distributing all K-1s including obtaining consent to distribute electronically where applicable. Responsible for maintaining relevant POA and other required documentation for partner inclusion in state composite filings. Reconciles partner tax with-holdings with tax return payments annually. Manages the 1099 process for the firm (both incoming and outgoing). Responsible for filing unclaimed property reports for the firm to all applicable states. Responsible for researching state and local registrations and filing requirements for new jurisdictions. Reviews monthly special and independent contractor pay calculations. Completes annual insurance renewal (either general or professional liability). Reviews monthly VEBA reconciliation and annual audit prep for this benefit plan. Reconciles monthly medical administrator invoice. Maintains and calculates partner retirement contributions (on-going maintenance as well as quarterly contributions. Should have knowledge of accounting and financial management principles in order to provide financial reports at a level normally acquired through a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or equivalent; CPA or CPA candidate preferred. Must have 3—4 years of progressively responsible public accounting work experience.
