Environmental & Energy Attorney
The candidate will work independently and as part of state-based and regional teams serving as a policy specialist in clean energy and climate laws, policies and strategies that will achieve the states’ compliance with their mandatory climate laws, while ensuring a clean energy transition that is just. Advocacy will include collaborating with partner organizations, including environmental justice groups and communities. The attorney will play an integral role in identifying and designing high-impact, cutting-edge climate policies and advocacy efforts that contribute to an over-arching strategy to tackle the climate crisis, protect public health, and provide benefits and opportunities to the region’s communities, particularly those that have shouldered disproportionate burdens from our transportation and energy systems. They will also help track state progress on climate plans, targets and timelines. Develop relationships, build coalitions, and work collaboratively with community and advocacy groups, public officials, and business interests. Devise and execute legal strategies for achieving CLF’s advocacy goals. Represent CLF in litigation and administrative proceedings. Advocate before state public utility commissions and legislatures. Draft public comment letters on projects, policies, and plans. Prepare research reports, memos, and presentations. Assist the development team with fundraising efforts; and Assist the communications team in creating and delivering advocacy news and key messages to the press, our members, and the public. At least two to five years of experience practicing law, preferably in New England, and at least seven years of experience to be considered for Senior Attorney. An active bar license and good standing in Massachusetts, or an active license and good standing in another state and willingness to become licensed in Massachusetts. Experience working with state and federal environmental, energy, and climate laws and a strong grasp of political systems and regulatory proceedings is preferred. Advocacy experience before regulatory agencies and legislative bodies. Excellent analytical skills and the ability to put your analysis into writing that is easily understood to audiences with a wide range of technical or legal knowledge. Coalition and network building skills, including cultural competence and ability to communicate and collaborate within diverse and multicultural communities. A capacity to develop and/or enhance expertise in relevant technical or policy areas; and A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and environmental justice advocacy.
