We are looking for a Medical Director for the Family Residency Program at St Joseph Health!


St Joseph Hospital - Eureka, CA


Part time, 60 hours biweekly




Directs all operations of the Family Medicine Residency at St. Joseph Hospital and clinical patient care provided by house staff and faculty. Provides residents with superb training experience while meeting ABFM, ACGME, the Joint Commission, and Providence - St. Joseph Health standards.

Principal Duties And Functions:

Plans, organizes, leads and develops departmental strategies, goals, and operations. Meets ABFM, AAFP, ACGME, the Joint Commission, and other required regulatory standards.

Supervises faculty, residents, and administrative staff in matters of recruitment, performance evaluation, compensation, and disciplinary action, and development.

Provides active leadership and effective advocacy for all departmental interests in interactions with key stakeholder groups including:

Medical staff at St Joseph – Eureka (SJE) & Redwood Memorial (RMH)Hospitals

Administration of Providence - St Joseph Health (PSJH) - Humboldt (SJE & RMH)

Administration of PSJH Northern California Region

Providence - St Joseph Health Provider Health Plans

St Joseph Health Medical Group (SJHMG)

University of California Davis (UC Davis) and other University Partners

Local, regional, and national academic organizations

Actively participates in educational activities of the Family Medicine Residency. Specifics depend on professional qualifications. Regardless of

Precepting Residents (and Medical Students) in Family Medicine in the inpatient (Hospital) and Outpatient (Clinic) settings

Provides planning, monitoring and accountability for all fiscal affairs of the Department including:

Operating budget

Foundation and grant support

Clinical revenue and expenses

Contract negotiation

Medicare funding for graduate medical education

Implementation of departmental policies on travel and other benefits consistent with both contractual and institutional requirements.

Demonstrates leadership in family medicine at local, regional and national levels, which build positive reputation for the St Joseph Hospital – Eureka Family Medicine Residency Program.

Approximate time commitments:

30-40% administrative duties

40-50% faculty/teaching/academic responsibilities


Education, Training & Experience (includes licenses or certifications):

Meets all qualifications for residency program director as described in the ACGME Program Requirements for Family Medicine Residencies, including:


equisite specialty expertise and documented educational and administrative experience acceptable to the Review Committee

Current certification in the specialty by the American Board of Family Medicine

Medical degree from an accredited medical school

Current California state medical licensure

Active or Active Provisional appointment on the medical staff of residency hospital(s)

Actively involved in the care of patient


minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience in family medicine, with at least three years as a core faculty member in an ACGME-accredited family medicine residency program

Demonstrated success as a provider of quality patient care.

Demonstrated leadership and skills in teaching residents.

Demonstrated academic leadership experience; as evidenced by

Present or past faculty appointment at accredited medical school

Present or past director, associate director, or core faculty of accredited residency program

Demonstrated evidence of scholarly activity through one or more of the following

Approval/funding of peer-reviewed competitive research grants

Publication of original research or review articles in peer reviewed journals, or textbook chapter(s);

Publication or presentation of case reports or clinical series at local, regional, or national, professional and scientific society meetings;

Invitation to contribute chapters to standard medical textbooks

Participation in national committees or educational organi
