The Data and Analytics team is responsible for leveraging data and analytics to inform decision making across all parts of the enterprise, fueling our ability to unleash the next generation of customer experiences and to transform the way Best Buy operates.

The Director of Category Decision Science

will provide both thought leadership and people leadership to identify, develop, and implement increasingly effective Analytics and Decision Science capabilities for our category business teams.

This position requires strategic thinking, cross-functional leadership and influence across the organization as well as a strong understanding of applied advanced analytics, data science, machine learning, statistics and decision science to identify, activate and deliver solutions with innovation, competitive advantage and growth.

What will you do?

Develop and drive Category Analytics and Decision Science work

Influence decision making through effective thought leadership and demonstrating what's possible

Oversee and direct the identification, scoping, prioritization, activation, delivery and management of analytical solutions to leverage intelligence in category decisions related to assortment, merchandising, pricing, offers, demand planning, inventory placement and other strategic category decisions

Evaluate the balance of work demanded vs. resources available across Data and Analytics teams and articulate tradeoffs to clients and executives

Develop, package, and present proposals for capital funding and operational expense funding to drive forward state-of-the-art analytics

Contribute to the preparation and review of projects assuring quality, consistency, and utility

Foster and develop engagement and partnerships cross-functionally throughout the enterprise

Present to and partner collaboratively with Sr. VPs, VPs and Sr. Directors to optimize business decisions leveraging intelligence

Interface and work cross functionally with other relevant functional areas (Finance, Retail, Ecommerce, Technology, Marketing, Customer Experience, Inventory, Labor, Supply Chain etc.) to drive a greater understanding of the impact of Category efforts and facilitate seamless execution of Category initiatives

Communicate analytic concepts in easy to understand real world business context to all levels of employees, from line level to executive

Leadership, Team Development, People Management and Budget Management

Develop a team strategic vision and participate in annual planning process

Set clear direction and expectations for the team and holds them accountable to those expectations

Delegate effectively and ensures clarity of responsibilities, decision rights and accountabilities

Coach and develop others to achieve maximum potential and personal satisfaction

Foster a learning environment and promotes knowledge-sharing across teams

Attract and grow high-quality skilled talent to maximize the collective capability and meet the future needs of the enterprise in partnership with Human Resources

Oversee third-party vendors and/or contract workers. Activities include contract reviews, monthly status reviews, invoice/budgeting and ensuring performance success

Exploration of new, innovative, and cutting-edge methods and processes

Keep abreast of new theories, strategies and best practices in the industry

Think beyond current knowledge and existing assumptions to develop new solutions, applications and strategies

Drive efficiencies across analytics and reporting processes by the use of automation and implementation of industry best practices

Represent Best Buy at industry conferences

Basic Requirements (You must meet or exceed all basic requirements to be eligible)

Bachelor's degree in statistics, mathematics, economics, engineering, the physical sciences, computer science, or similar field with quantitative rigor

11 years’ experience in retail, analytics, business, or related area

5 years’ experience using applied analytics, statistics and/or data science, in a large corporate environment, to solve large, complex, time sensitive business problems

6 years of direct or indirect managerial or leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in business, statistics, mathematics, economics, engineering, the physical sciences, computer science or similar field with quantitative rigor

Demonstrated success collaborating/influencing cross functional business teams/decisions

5 years’ experience leveraging data science and data visualization tools, such as SQL, Tableau/PowerBI, SAS, R and/or Python

1 year or more of influencing and presenting to executives
