Sr. Patent Agent

The candidate will be an essential member of an international group of attorneys, patent agents, and support personnel responsible for the intellectual property matters of our vibrant and fast-growing Genetic Sciences Division, which includes the COVID testing business as well as multiple platforms for genetic testing and analysis, with increasing relevance beyond the laboratory. We are seeking an enthusiastic self-starter who is resourceful, creative, organized, a strong team player, and flexible in approach. Identify and capture high-value IP; Prepare and prosecute high quality patent applications; Assess freedom-to-operate and counsel R&D colleagues; Manage and improve processes for tracking innovation and competitor IP activity; Advise colleagues regarding IP-related issues, including technology transfer and legal and policy developments; Support oppositions, post-grant challenges, licensing matters, and disputes; and, Support IP Department initiatives. B.S. or advanced degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related fields; Admission to practice before the US Patent & Trademark Office; Experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications: 3+ years for attorney applicants; 5+ or more years for patent agent applicants; Writing samples will be requested. Ability to develop practical processes and approaches and drive to completion; Ability to work collaboratively and effectively across organizational and geographic boundaries; Ability to influence colleagues at all levels across the organization; Fluent in spoken and written English; and, Critical thinker with a big picture mindset. Experience with European patent practice is a plus; Experience in genetic analysis is a plus; Experience working in both law firm and in-house settings is a plus; Additional language proficiency is a plus; Exposure to commercial agreements is a plus; and, Exposure to patent litigation, international IP law, licensing, and/or trademarks is a plus.
